It might seem uncommon to present an award to Purdue Engineers who are 38 years old or younger. But when you consider that Neil Armstrong was 38 years old when he became the first person to set foot on the moon, the #PurdueEngineering #38by38 award not only makes a lot of sense, but also has special meaning. We combed through hundreds of nominations, never ceasing to be amazed at the accomplishments of our alumni. I am very excited to begin my journey as faculty at an institution that is truly unique. As founding faculty member at Greenway, I am working with an exemplary team to build an undergraduate engineering college from scratch. How can we design educational experiences for today's students that develop their industry-relevant knowledge in a hands-on and mastery-based curriculum? How can we prepare the next generation of engineers to design our sustainable and equitable future? How can we design a program that weaves in a diverse set of student experiences and perspectives? These are questions that I am grappling with on a daily basis alongside the rest of the Greenway team!

  Many hidden geniuses exist among us, their brilliance often unrecognized due to their modest nature. There is no choice but to implement digital engineering for developing defense vehicles systems, according to Dr. David Gorsich, chief scientist of the U.S. Army DEVCOM Ground Vehicle Systems Center. During an event at Clemson University last week, Gorsich said: "The future of this nation's development of vehicles systems depends on digital engineering approaches. These approaches make the design and development of our systems faster, more efficient and cost effective and reduce risk." He continued, "Based on the pressures of global competition, there is no other way." Gorsich was speaking at the annual review of Clemson and the US Army's partnership, the VIPR-GS Research Center, which is in its fifth year. VIPR is an acronym for Virtual Prototyping of Autonomy-Enabled Ground Systems. Zoran Filipi, founding director of VIPR-GS and Clemson's School of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering, said the scale of this year's event was unprecedented. The DEVCOM Ground Systems Center (GVSC), formerly known as the United States Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC), is the US Armed Forces' R&D facility for advanced technology in ground systems. Hybrid Rocket System Presentation Mechanical Engineering Senior Steven Dipani and Professor Dustin Birch recently represented Weber State at the University Consortium for Applied Hypersonics Forum 2024 in Alexandria, Virginia. Steven presented at the student poster section on behalf of Dr. Birch’s research team currently working to develop a hybrid rocket system used to evaluate high-temperature materials. The high-temperature materials testbed is sponsored by the WSU College of Engineering, Applied Science, and Technology as well as the Miller Advanced Research & Solutions (MARS) center. Aerospace vehicles that fly at hypersonic velocities (Mach Numbers greater than 5) experience very hot air temperatures around the vehicle due to atmospheric friction. These high temperatures require advanced materials to allow the vehicle to survive in that extreme environment. This important research is working to bring these advanced material systems to operational maturity.

Last week, I had the privilege of attending the IEEE International Conference on Evolving and Adaptive Intelligent Systems 2024 (IEEE EAIS 2024), held at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. There, I had the opportunity to present my work, "What are the most influential factors in a Vehicle Platoon?". With Black History Month coming to a close, we'd like to share the story of the influential engineer and inventor, Granville T. Woods. After being recognized as the first African American mechanical and electrical engineer after the Civil War, this self-taught inventor went on to hold more than 50 patents in the United States. Most of his work was related to transportation and communication. One of Mr. Woods' inventions is the Synchronous Multiplex Railway Telegraph, which allowed communications between train stations and moving trains by creating a magnetic field around a coiled wire under the train. Some referred to Granville T. Woods as the "Black Edison", but the comparison could have easily gone the other way. Thomas Edison filed claims to the ownership of some of his patents, but Woods was successful in defending himself. After Thomas Edison's defeats, he offered Granville T. Woods a position with the Edison Company, but Woods declined. In 1916, Woods manufactured one of the first hybrid automobiles. Rather than a gasoline car with electric transmission, the Woods Coupe was a self-charging electric vehicle capable of running on gas and electricity simultaneously or with gasoline alone. This hybrid solution was simple and elegant with no gears or clutch necessary.
