US FDA approved on Friday FluMist, the first influenza vaccine that does not need to be administered by a health care provider. MedImmune, the maker of FluMist, plans to offer the vaccine through a third-party pharmacy. In the US individuals willing to get access to the vaccine will complete a screening and eligibility assessment will be approved by the third-party pharmacy. FluMist is the only needle-free seasonal flu vaccine option in the United States and is given intranasally. FluMist is a live attenuated vaccine that contains weakened influenza viruses. The vaccine is approved for the prevention of influenza disease caused by influenza virus subtypes A and B in individuals 2 through 49 years of age. The FDA recommends that a caregiver administer FluMist to those ages 2 to 17 years old. According to FDA documents FluMist is not approved for use in older persons because in a clinical study (AV009), effectiveness of FluMist to prevent febrile illness was not demonstrated in adults 50 through 64 years of age. In another study of FluMist in persons 65 years of age and older, recipients of the vaccine in this group with underlying high-risk medical in this group had a higher rate of sore throat as compared to controls. https://sco.lt/7nphAm #influenza #medimmune #health #globalhealth #publichealth #medicine #biotechnology #medicine #pharmaceuticals #FDA #CDC #WHO #ECDC #vaccines

📈Increasing uptake: going beyond the classic awareness focus to step change 📈 💬Whenever I speak to someone (client, candidate, colleague) about increasing uptake, their first answer is always “raise awareness” awareness - and in the case of vaccines, “boost vaccine confidence”. 💡Yet, the ingredients to go beyond the incremental ~1% increase are much more multi factorial (👇link below) 1️⃣ HA accountability : setting clear targets and holding stakeholders accountable 2️⃣ Simplified access: for example, pharma based immunization 3️⃣HCP accountability: for example, through the incentivization of GPs to reach specific targets 4️⃣ Awareness of disease burden: e.g. through a strong reporting system that effectively reports cases & burden 5️⃣ Belief in intervention benefits : e.g. establishing trust and showcasing the impact 👩🍳The ingredients are, of course, different depending on the therapeutic area, and the recipe is unique to each country. One thing is common: a multi-pronged approach is necessary. ❓What other ideas do you have beyond increasing awareness ?

💊Max Daily Health Tips Day 1️⃣1️⃣ Some FACTS ABOUT VACCINES ♻️Vaccines go through extensive clinical trials involving thousands of participants to ensure they are safe and effective before approval. ♻️Health authorities like the WHO and FDA review vaccine data to ensure they meet strict safety standards before being approved for use. ♻️Vaccines have been safely used for decades, protecting millions of people from life-threatening diseases like polio, measles, and smallpox. ♻️After approval, vaccines are continuously monitored for side effects. Any potential risks are quickly addressed by health authorities. ♻️Vaccines contain safe, well-researched ingredients. These include weakened or inactive parts of viruses, which help train the immune system. ♻️Vaccines do not cause the diseases they are designed to protect against, as they only contain harmless components of the virus or bacteria. ♻️Some vaccines contain adjuvants, which boost the immune response. These adjuvants have been used safely in vaccines for years. ♻️Vaccines are continuously reviewed and updated to ensure they remain effective and safe over time. ♻️Vaccines provide long-term protection against diseases, reducing the need for repeated exposure to potentially dangerous infections. ♻️The diseases vaccines prevent, like measles and polio, are far more dangerous than any risks associated with vaccines. ♻️Ingredients like preservatives or stabilizers are used in very tiny, safe amounts to ensure vaccine potency and shelf life. ♻️Vaccines are based on decades of scientific research, ensuring they work safely and effectively. ♻️Vaccine dosages are carefully calculated to be just enough to stimulate immunity without causing harm. ♻️While allergic reactions to vaccines are possible, they are extremely rare and treatable. ♻️Vaccines are approved by panels of independent experts who review all safety and efficacy data. ♻️As new information emerges, vaccines are updated to improve safety and efficacy, ensuring they continue to be safe for all populations. USFDA: Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Flu Mist for self- or caregiver-administration. Flu Mist is approved for the prevention of influenza disease caused by influenza virus subtypes A and B in individuals 2 through 49 years of age. Flu Mist is sprayed into the nose and has been used safely and effectively for many years. It was initially approved by the FDA in 2003 for use in individuals 5 through 49 years of age, and in 2007, the FDA approved the use of Flu Mist to include children 2 through 5 years of age. It is the first vaccine to prevent influenza, more commonly known as the flu, that does not need to be administered by a health care provider. Today’s approval of the first influenza vaccine for self- or caregiver-administration provides a new option for receiving a safe and effective seasonal influenza vaccine potentially with greater convenience, flexibility and accessibility for individuals and families. Said Peter Marks, M.D., Ph.D., director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research. Getting vaccinated each year is the best way to prevent influenza, which causes illness in a substantial proportion of the U.S. population every year and may result in serious complications, including hospitalization and death. This approval adds another option for vaccination against influenza disease and demonstrates the FDA’s commitment to advancing public health. #usfda #influenza #vaccine #seasonalvaccine
