🔙 #TurnbackTuesday 🌟 #The51 In Action - Nourishing Communities in Times of Need 🌾 As the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted lives and livelihoods in 2021, SupportDDS & ZimWorX through #The51 was able to aid an organization called Chenga Ose Association. The51 stepped up to address the growing issue of food insecurity in this community. Recognizing the dire circumstances faced by many, our organization launched a vital initiative to provide food packs for those most affected. For 3 months, we worked tirelessly to distribute these essential supplies, ensuring that families had access to the sustenance they needed. This #The51 initiative was a testament to the power of community collaboration and our unwavering commitment to support one another during challenging times. New Feeding America Data on Food Insecurity – Some Key Takeaways: Nearly 50% of people facing hunger are unlikely to qualify for SNAP The national food budget shortfall swells to a record high of $33.1 billion, a 43% increase The national average cost per meal rises to $3.99 in 2022 - Individuals who were food secure reported spending an average of $3.99 per meal, totaling $83.79 per week or $363.09 per month. Even after adjusting for annual average inflation, the national average cost per meal increased by nearly 3% compared to the previous year, reaching its highest point in the last two decades. To provide context, this reported amount is 1.6 times as high as the average individual cost of the Thrifty Food Plan ($52.70 per week or $228.50 per month as of December 2022), which serves as the basis for calculating the maximum SNAP benefit allotments by the USDA.

We can leverage this data to address factors impacting food insecurity and unite to ensure everyone has access to the food and resources we all need to thrive. Feeding America's Map the Meal Gap study is the only annual report that provides local-level estimates of food insecurity and food costs for every county and congressional district in the US. This year's study, published yesterday, shows the harsh reality that 44 million people face hunger, and that the amount of money needed to get the food families need to be food secure has reached a 20 year high. Data from 2022 was just released, and in Harvesters' service area, 1 in 8 people (12.4%) are experiencing food insecurity, up from 1 in 11 the previous year. For children, that number is 1 in 6.
