My master's thesis has been published in Fuel. This is a massive experimental and theoretical work from 2021 to 2023. Here, we present the chemistry/physics/mathematics of the instability of ammonia flames when interacting with acoustic pressure waves. It is explained here that the large activation energy of chemical reactions in ammonia combustion dominates the instability. This is a unique nature of ammonia as fuel when compared with hydrocarbon fuels.But why burn ammonia (NH3) as fuel? Recently, Japan and the west is exploring the viability of ammonia as carbon-free energy carrier. Despite some handling challenges ( e.g. toxic and corrosive), the viability to store and transport energy in the form of ammonia is gaining much interest and is expected to reach maturity in the short term. It has larger volumetric energy density than hydrogen and is easier to contain and transport. Ammonia is the second most industrialized chemical and is widely used in the agriculture and refrigeration industry. The production of ammonia is also highly optimized since the invention of the Haber-Bosch process. Its storage and transportation network is very much established across the globe. Burning ammonia is a very hot topic in Energy/Fuel/Combustion science and many reviews on ammonia combustion are published in numerous academic papers. However, there's still so many things unknown on burning ammonia. The contribution of this work is to characterize the nature of ammonia flames when interacting with acoustic pressure waves (sound). When uncontrolled, the interaction of unsteady heat release and pressure waves is very dangerous which can endanger the performance and lifetime of combustors, or worse, cause failure (aka combustion instability)The article can be seen here.https://https://lnkd.in/gkvW3TJx
