Globally, approximately 63% of people have internet access. Within Africa's rural population, the figure stands at less than 30%. This digital divide limits educational opportunities and impedes economic development by isolating communities from digital marketplaces. As of January this year, around 74% of the web traffic in Africa was via mobile phones. This is partly due to mobile connections being cheaper and not requiring the infrastructure needed for traditional desktop PCs. Nigeria reportedly has 222.5 million phones in use, making it the 7th biggest phone market in the world. But despite this staggering statistic, almost half of its population is not digitally connected, which hints at Nigeria's possibility of ranking higher in global phone consumption as broadband penetration increases. If you're wondering why this growth is important to the country, here's it: This growth would directly boost the nation's GDP, attract foreign investment, prompt local smart device production, etc. As we seek ways and means to prosper the nation, prioritizing digital inclusion is a step in the right direction. #infratelafrica #technology #digitalinclusion #ruraltelephony #internetaccess

🛜 It seems that road rage doesn’t exist on our roads alone but also on the information highway. I bet there were many angry calls to multiple ISPs last week, as low speeds to no speeds characterized users experience in East Africa. This was due to the underwater sea cables getting cut. Three of the subsea cables serving our region were cut ✂️ and one more cable is faulty. The respective cables are SEACOM, EIG and AAE1, with EASSy being faulty. Well, I guess this makes sense as many household’s fiber routers have been blinking red and smartphones have been experiencing poor connectivity over the past week. At one point this sparked memories of when we used dial-up internet and you would wait for minutes for an single image to load, or even to search the internet. This was back when 56 kbps modems were everywhere. The internet back then moved at a snail’s pace 🐌 and it wasn’t for the weak. I guess if you can survive a week of poor connectivity you can go through anything. How poor was your connectivity this past week, and how did you survive❓💬 #internet #underwatercable #poorconnectivity #eastafrica #seacom
