Beef Exports: Surging Demand from Key Asian Markets In the week under review, net beef sales reached 22,500 metric tons (MT) for 2024, a substantial increase from the previous week and a staggering 68 percent higher than the four-week average. The main destinations for U.S. beef were South Korea (7,900 MT), China (6,200 MT), Mexico (2,800 MT), Japan (2,600 MT), and Taiwan (1,000 MT). These nations have long been key importers of U.S. beef, with South Korea and China leading the pack. Exports were equally strong, with 17,700 MT shipped out—a marketing-year high—up by 42 percent from the prior week. The increase in exports reflects not only growing international demand but also the competitiveness of U.S. beef in these markets. South Korea, Japan, China, Mexico, and Taiwan remain the largest importers, accounting for most of the shipments. Pork Exports: A Booming Market, Led by Mexico While beef sales were impressive, pork export sales for 2024 surged even higher, with net sales totaling 43,400 MT, a 55 percent rise from the previous week and a 61 percent boost from the prior four-week average. The primary buyers of U.S. pork were Mexico (24,000 MT), China (7,900 MT), Canada (2,900 MT), South Korea (2,000 MT), and Japan (1,500 MT). Mexico continues to dominate U.S. pork imports, as it accounted for the lion’s share of the export volume. However, the sales to China and Canada reflect the global appeal of U.S. pork, even amid competition from other pork-exporting nations. While exports to Japan and South Korea remained modest, the consistent demand from these countries provides a solid foundation for future growth.

Brazilian Beef exports hit record Movement in July approaches 300 thousand tons, but falling prices worry the sector Total Brazilian beef exports, including processed and fresh meat, reached a new all-time high in July 2024, reaching 291,075 tons, an increase of 42% compared to the previous month. This volume marks the first time that exports have approached 300 thousand tons in a single month. The previous record, of 282,514 tons, was recorded in December 2023. Despite the increase in exported volume, average prices remain below those recorded last year. In July 2023, the average price of Brazilian beef was US$4,265 per ton, while in July 2024 it fell to US$4,007, a 6% reduction. However, total export revenue increased by 33%, from US$876.9 million in July 2023 to US$1.166 billion in July 2024. The Brazilian Association of Beefpackers (ABRAFRIGO), based on data from the Foreign Trade Secretariat (SECEX), highlighted that, in the year to July, Brazil exported 1.731 million tons of beef, an increase of 35% compared to to the same period in 2023. Accumulated revenue was also a record, rising 20%, from US$5.810 billion to US$6.988 billion. The drop in average prices is largely attributed to negotiations with China, which continues to be the main market for Brazilian beef, responsible for 40% of the country's exports. Although the volume exported to China increased by 12.7% in 2024, revenue fell by 0.2% due to the 11.5% reduction in average prices. Other important markets, such as the United States and the United Arab Emirates, also showed significant changes. The USA, the second largest buyer, increased its purchases by 84.5%, but the average prices paid fell from US$3,910 to US$2,910 per ton. The United Arab Emirates rose to third place among the largest buyers, with a 212% increase in imported volume and a slight increase in average prices. This data indicates that, despite record growth in exports, the sector faces challenges related to the drop in average prices and the need to further diversify its markets to ensure better profit margins. NZ red meat exports: China demand soft but positive growth in all other key markets All key red meat export markets, apart from China, showed positive growth during June, according to an analysis from the Meat Industry Association (MIA).New Zealand exported red meat worth $914 million during the month, a 2% increase on June 2023. The US was again the largest market, with exports up 14% to $303m. There were also increases in Japan, up 53% to $61m, the UK, up 66% to $53m, and Canada, up 94% to $51m. China was the second-largest market but fell 38% to $176m. Meat Industry Association of New Zealand chief executive Sirma Karapeeva said while the China market remained soft, with some recovery expected in 2025, other key markets were seeing positive returns. “The US was the most valuable sheepmeat market for the month,” she said. “This was the first time since July 2017 that China hasn’t been the largest market by value for sheepmeat. Karapeeva said beef exports to China were also down but overall exports remained steady due to strong demand from the US, Japan and Canada. “These trends were also reflected in the data for the second quarter and for the year to the end of June, with the value of exports down for China but increasing to most other key markets.” Sheepmeat exports totalled 29,829 tonnes in June, up 22% from a relatively low level last June. Value only increased by 8%, to $294m, due to the lower value of exports to China. The US imported New Zealand sheepmeat worth $62m, with China dropping by 39% to $52m. Beef exports increased 1% by volume to 50,907 tonnes and 3% by value to $470m. Beef exports to China were down 44% to $83m but exports to the US rose 16% to $221m, 101% to Japan to $46m and 112% to Canada to $35m. Fifth quarter exports were unchanged from last year at $150m. https://lnkd.in/dFaeiFJH #meatindustry #meatmarket #beef #pork
