Great post that further highlights what those of us in business can learn from sport.
AFL - Australian Football League clubs are champions of succession planning. How? Because every single day during the AFL season, 18 clubs think about and communicate 'selection'. They ask themselves important questions that are purely focused on the performance of their team - which is bigger than the individual. The players are under permanent watch. Everything is scrutinised and assessed in the name of performance. Performance is measured by the scoreboard and it always tells the truth. Everyone can see it. Succession decisions are ultimately made so a team/club can be in front on the scoreboard on Grand Final day. To win the premiership cup. Last Saturday's Grand Final, we saw the Brisbane Lions defeat the Sydney Swans by 60 points. Congratulations to the Lions on winning the 2024 premiership and their coach Chris Fagan on a wonderful victory and amazing season. The scoreboard vindicated their succession decisions - some were made very recently. For example, Lions' ruckman Oscar McInerney suffered a 'double dislocation' of his shoulder in the preliminary final (the week before the Grand Final) and was ruled out for medical reasons. We all saw Oscar's selfless reaction to the win despite not being able to play the match himself. Well done Oscar - your whole approach is 'team first'. Darcy Fort took Oscar's place in the side and performed extremely well. One player out - one player in. Practical succession. For the good of the team. Not all succession decisions are as straightforward, but they should always be communicated sensitively and arrived at via a sensible process. The joy and excitement on Chris Fagan's face is wonderful to see in this photograph taken on the Melbourne Cricket Ground after the grand final win. He looks so happy. Years of hard work, sacrifice, tough conversations, hard selection calls, injuries, suspensions, unexpected losses, lack of sleep, time on planes and in airports, media scrutiny and public criticism that come with the job, look like they have been worth it. To achieve the ultimate - a premiership. Succession in families and businesses is worth doing properly, just like it is in football. By approaching succession using the same principles, success can be achieved and heartache can be avoided. We can all be champions of succession. #successionplanning #inheritance #wealthtransfer #executors #trustees David Naphtali Michael Naphtali vestadvisory.com

"I could probably put the under-18 team out there and they wouldn't concede six goals, so I'm very disappointed, angry, frustrated and the next 24-48 hours are not going to be very nice for the players” - Wayne Rooney after the latest heavy defeat for his Plymouth Argyle team Highly decorated player as he was, I wonder if Rooney the manager might benefit from Deci and Ryan’s 1985 Self-Determination Theory of Motivation…! According to this, high motivation comes from feeling: 1. COMPETENT – feeling effective and capable 2. RELATEDNESS – feeling close, connected to, and valued by others 3. AUTONOMY – feeling willingly engaged in behaviours Tough job though football management is, I’m not convinced the words above will make the Plymouth players feel any more capable, valued, or willingly engaged in their next match… …what does anyone else think?? https://lnkd.in/e59Fswbp P.S. If you’d like to discuss how I apply this theory in market research (it’s not only useful for judging football managers!) please get in touch.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗘𝗿𝗶𝗸 𝗧𝗲𝗻 𝗛𝗮𝗴’𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘀?🇳🇱 In his third season as Manchester United coach, much has been said about Erik Ten Hag’s time as the Red Devils' manager. But what does the data say?📊 We looked at Manchester United’s Club Level development—available in our 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁—to better understand how the club has performed under the Dutch coach. The Club Level index ranks football teams by their playing strength based on match results. Points depend on team strength, opponent strength, and home advantage, with tougher matches offering more points than easier ones. As with his predecessors, consistency has been a major issue for Manchester United managers. Erik Ten Hag has reached similar heights to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but has struggled to maintain that level since his first season at the club. In fact, the team's Club Level has rapidly declined since his first season with the Red Devils 🔴 What do you think? If Ten Hag doesn’t manage to return to the heights of his first season soon, should he be replaced as Manchester United manager? #FootballAnalysis #ClubLevel #footballdata #PremierLeague #FootballCoaching

My first article for my new blog page, includes how it is time for the Carlton Football Club to become ruthless in their premiership hunt now. After a couple close victories. It is time for them to take the next step. https://lnkd.in/eNyiuQ8T
‘Need to be ruthless’: If Carlton truly are a premiership contender, it’s time they start acting like one

"He's done a lot of positives for this nation" | Jay Bothroyd praises Carsley’s impact as manager A New Era for England Football: Reflections on Lee Carsley's Impact The recent friendly match between England and Switzerland at Wembley Stadium was a resounding success, with the Three Lions emerging victorious 2-1. But more than just the result, the contrast between the two halves of the game was striking. The first half was a lackluster display, with the team struggling to find their rhythm. In stark contrast, the second half was a different story altogether, with the players looking sharp, moving the ball around with intent, and playing with a sense of purpose. Lee Carsley's Legacy The man behind the team's transformation was Lee Carsley, the caretaker manager who has taken the reins following Gareth Southgate's departure. Carsley's impact on the team has been nothing short of remarkable, and his departure has left a void that will be difficult to fill. The players' reactions to his departure, particularly the young ones who have worked with him at the under-21 level, were a testament to his influence. As they walked off the pitch, many of them made a point to go up to Carsley and show him their respect, a sign of the bond that has been formed between the manager and his players. A Bright Future Ahead With Carsley's departure, the spotlight turns to Thomas Tuchel, the new manager of the English national team. While there is still much uncertainty about what the future holds, one thing is clear: the team has a talented pool of young players who are ready to make their mark. Players like Morgan Gibbs-White, Curtis Jones, and Taylor Hardwood Bellis have been making waves in the Premier League, and it's not hard to see why. They are the kind of players who can bring a new level of energy and enthusiasm to the team, and who can help take England to the next level. The Balance of Experience and Youth As Tuchel looks to build his team, he will need to strike the right balance between experience and youth. While players like Harry Kane and Kieran Trippier will always... #Sport #CurtisJones #ENGLANDFOOTBALL #GarethSouthgate #HarryKane #kierantrippier #LeeCarsley #morgangibbswhite #TaylorHardwoodBellis #ThomasTuchel

FOOTBALL FRIDAY ⚽ In Scottish football, the term "bronze criteria" typically refers to the set of requirements that clubs must meet to gain entry to the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL). These criteria ensure that clubs are financially stable and meet the standards expected within the (SPFL) league structure. "The Scottish FA has announce that Buckie Thistle FC will not be eligible to participate in the Pyramid Play-Off tie," the governing body has stated. "A Flawed Process" "As someone who values logical reasoning, I find it perplexing how a structured league system can culminate in such an unprofessional and controversial conclusion to the season. This glaring flaw underscores the lack of consistent standards among the various associations overseeing the Scottish leagues within the pyramid system." It appears that Buckie FC's aspiration was to secure promotion and partake in the league, yet financial or organisational constraints hindered their progress. To address this predicament, there ought to be a comprehensive funding initiative in place to ensure that clubs facing similar challenges receive the necessary financial backing to pursue their objectives for the upcoming season. "The Purpose of the Pyramid" was with its promotion and relegation system, is often considered fair because it allows teams to advance or regress based on their performance on the field rather than subjective judgments by a committee? Furthermore, it would be prudent to align the "Bronze Licensing Criteria" with the leagues in which participating teams compete. A simple application process and more equitable and accountable approach will involve disqualifying teams from promotion at the season's outset if they fail to meet the specified criteria. These teams would not be able to be promoted. Conversely an alternative is, if a team demonstrates responsible adherence to the standards of the Highland League without encountering significant obstacles, they should be afforded a season to fulfil the criteria. It's noteworthy that certain clubs within the league undergo annual audits based on the same criteria, allowing them the opportunity to rectify any deficiencies rather than being summarily expelled from the league immediately. Moreover, it's perplexing to discover that Brechin FC doesn't assume Buckie FC's place in the playoffs if they fulfil the criteria. Both teams have recently competed in a league that seemingly lacked any real significance. Will Scottish football embrace logic and adopt a more structured approach to address these issues?

🚀 From FA Cup Finals to Premier League Survival – Lessons from the West Ham Rollercoaster! ⚽️ Working as a performance psychologist at West Ham United during two unforgettable seasons gave me a front-row seat to the power of resilience, teamwork, and never-say-die attitudes! 📅 Season 1: With Alan Pardew at the helm, we reached the FA Cup Final (nearly broke Liverpool's hearts!), qualified for Europe, and played some of the best football. That team consisted of future stars—Carlos Tevez, Anton Ferdinand, Mark Noble, Bobby Zamora, and Rob Green. A squad of champions! 📅 Season 2: The "Great Escape" with Alan Curbishley came. We needed to win 7 out of our last nine games to survive after only picking up 23% of available points up to that point. No problem, right? 😅 But we flipped the script, finishing the season with a 78% return. Victories away at Arsenal and Manchester United, no less! 💪 🎯 Key lesson for organisations: Whether on the pitch or in the boardroom, success doesn't come from talent alone. It's about bringing the right mindset to the table. Resilience, belief, and teamwork transformed a near-impossible task into a success story. 🔥 If you want your team to thrive under pressure like that, take a page from West Ham's journey. When backs are against the wall, true champions rise! 🏆 #Leadership #Teamwork #Resilience #PerformancePsychology #WestHam #SuccessMindset #AlanPardew #AlanCurbishley #CarlosTevez #GreatEscape #PremierLeague #FAcupFinal

Possession is always a stat that generates debate in football. Disclaimer, I loved the Sam Allardyce Bolton team. Packed with flair & muscle that side went for the jugular & used their strengths. Way ahead of their time. 944 game sample; - Just 11 wins with less than 30% possession - Aveley Football Club beat Dorking Wanderers FC with only 54 completed passes. - Weymouth Football Club win with lowest possession % at 22.9% (beating Dorking Wanderers FC) - Newcastle United Football Club defeat Southampton Football Club in the @premierleague with 26.4% of the ball Possession is a method of exploiting space and controlling territory. It’s expected that a coach has a posseison based style/ philosophy. The debate over direct play rages everyday. “get after them” “Play through the press” “Get rid” “Combine” “Pick up the second balls” “Hit the diag” “Play through the double pivot” Set up with a low block or high press? One thing for certain is stats such as possession/ passing/ shots on goal and dare I say it, xG, will always be advanced after a loss. Win the game with stacked stats against you, and you’ll reiterate the ‘only stat that matters is the scoreline’. Sure I’m being a little flippant. I’m an admirer of pressure football. So I’m bias and will always want the ball advanced and the attack initiated whenever fwd play can be taken. These headline stats will be used to enter into tactical debate with my students. #football #possession #direct #debate
