It’s no secret that the number of female gamers has been increasing over recent years – women and girl gamers play 10 hours per week and 87% play on mobile at least weekly – but despite this growth, this is an audience that is often overlooked or misunderstood. Found some great research from Bryter looking at the real stories behind female gaming. The data shows a growing interest in competitive and immersive gaming genres, with multiplayer titles like Fortnite extremely popular. 90% of women gamers play on console, compared to just 45% on PC, although the latter is slightly higher in the US (50% vs. 40% UK) – often the second biggest PC market globally, after China. The survey also touches on the barriers women face within the gaming community, from representation in games to inclusivity within online spaces. Spectating matters. For any type of public performance, your kid wants you to spectate. They want you to see them do their thing and be present through it all. They want to know that when they look up into the stands, they can see you rooting and cheering for them. It’s comforting and exciting all in one. And for physical sports, a piano recital, or a school play, most of the time you know what to do. Yeah, there are times when certain parents (thank God not you) get a little sideways but for the most part, they get it. But with gaming and esports? Hmmm, not so much. Yet, for parents whose kids are active in gaming or esports, knowing how to be a healthy spectator can seem less straightforward. Some don’t like gaming, some don’t understand the draw of video games, and some are willing but just don’t even know where to begin. The good news is that the same supportive behaviors from traditional sports and activities translate to gaming. Over the next three weeks, we’re going to share ways to help you understand why and how to be a healthy spectator. We’re also sharing with the players how to help you, too. The Why: Being a healthy spectator for gaming kids means more than just being present. It means creating an environment where your gamer feels valued, supported, and understood. Just as most parents wouldn’t criticize every missed goal or misplaced note, it’s crucial for you to approach gaming with the same grace and encouragement. It’s helpful when you understand that positive spectating fosters a sense of confidence, strengthens the bond between you and your kid, and encourages your gamer to pursue their interests wholeheartedly. It’s not just about winning or losing; it’s about celebrating effort, progress, and soaking in the joy that gaming brings to them. Helping parents understand these things is a big reason why Slingshot Esports exists. We want parents with gamer kids to be better equipped to create a healthy family dynamic so their kids can grow socially and spiritually while doing what they love. Join us at our upcoming GameFusion Event to learn more about how you can do that. Stay tuned. Next week we’ll begin to share practical tips for how you can be healthy spectators. Make the connection: What are some potential ways or things we can do to be a healthy spectator? We are #ForTheGamer and help players play with purpose and win for good. Opportunities abound for Older Gamers! As someone involved in Esports and competitive gaming for the past two decades, I'd like to share my perspective on the opportunities for older gamers in competitive gaming. The constantly changing landscape of gaming may make older gamers feel left behind. However, I believe that there are still plenty of opportunities for older gamers to get involved in competitive gaming. Certainly gaming has evolved significantly since the early days of console gaming when you had your first XBox or Playstation. Like me, it could even have been earlier with those 1st generation Atari and Nintendo systems. All of us who had those early experiences at home or in arcades are candidates for participating in the gaming scene today. The rise of live service games and online multiplayer has created new opportunities for gamers of all ages to connect and compete with each other. These on-line game platforms and worlds can also just be fun and casual place where you share some time with your children or grandchildren in their Virtual Worlds like Roblox, Minecraft, FORTNITE or a racing game like Forza. Gaming is the new town square so if you want to connect with the next generation, get your game on! As an older gamer myself, I can attest that the skills and experience gained from years of gaming can still be valuable in the gaming scene. Many professional players have successfully transitioned from playing games casually to competing at a high level, and there's no reason why older gamers can't do the same. Research shows that older gamers can bring a unique set of skills and perspectives to the esports scene. For example, a study published in the Journal of Electronic Gaming and Esports found that older gamers tend to have better teamwork and communication skills, which are essential for success in many esports games. The esports industry is not just limited to professional players. There are many other roles that older gamers can fill, such as coaches, analysts, and commentators. These roles require a deep understanding of the game and its mechanics, as well as strong communication and leadership skills. In addition, the growth of the esports industry has created new opportunities for older gamers to get involved in the business side of things. Many esports organizations are looking for experienced professionals to help manage their teams, develop their brands, and create engaging content for their fans. While the gaming landscape may be changing, there are still many opportunities for us older gamers to get involved. Whether it's as a professional player, coach, analyst, or commentator, or on the community side of things, there's no reason why older gamers can't be a part of this exciting and rapidly surging industry. So, to all you older gamers out there, don't be discouraged by the changing times. Instead, embrace the new opportunities that competitive gaming has to offer and get involved!

News like this is what gets me SO excited for the future of sports x gaming... For the first time in almost 6 years, mobile gaming juggernaut Supercell has released a new game, called #SquadBusters, and it represents an incredible new opportunity for brand partners. 😬 ... For context... New games are part of the lifeblood in this industry. And the mobile gaming industry as a whole is still very young as it's tied to the emergence of smart phones. So, to spend 6 years NOT launching a new game is a big deal. The early indicators are that this new game may be the next big thing for Supercell. 🎉 But what has me super excited is how it was uniquely and intentionally built to support #partnerships. The nature of it being a mashup of IP (among other things) lends itself incredibly well to future IP crossover. 👀 ... How is this relevant to the sports industry? First, we've already seen the early success the sports industry has had in the world of gaming (𝘦𝘹: 𝘌𝘈 𝘚𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘴, 𝘍𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘙𝘰𝘣𝘭𝘰𝘹) and IP crossover (𝘦𝘹: 𝘕𝘍𝘓'𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘕𝘪𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘛𝘰𝘺 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘨𝘢𝘮𝘦). And based on just the sheer numbers of active users, this medium is clearly the future of expanding fan bases. The key for both gaming and sports to capitalize here is: #partnerships. 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀: ✅ Greater accessibility given most games' free-to-play model and creative format ✅ Deeper engagement with fans via the active participation component of gaming ✅ Broader awareness via direct exposure to player bases (𝘦.𝘨. 𝘚𝘶𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘤𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 200 𝘔𝘐𝘓𝘓𝘐𝘖𝘕 𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘭𝘺 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘴 🤯) 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀: ✅ A high profile live event generating increased awareness/affinity of their game... not an easy feat in such a competitive market ✅ Incentive for current/lapsed/new players to spend more time (𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘺) in-game 𝗔𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗲𝗲, 𝗶𝘁'𝘀 𝗮 𝘄𝗶𝗻-𝘄𝗶𝗻 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Even better, the upside of partnerships is achieving EXPONENTIALLY GREATER results, together. Essentially, 1 + 1 = 3. 🚀 #sports #gaming #growth #letsbpartners
