WEROAD MONKEY HACKATHON   For those asking “what’s a hackathon?” then keep reading. A ‘hackathon’ is a portmanteau from 'hacker' + 'marathon,' and is a social coding event for programmers to improve upon or build a new software program. OK, but isn’t ‘hacker’ a negative term? Not in the tech world, friends, where ‘hacker’ means a ‘good programmer’, and ‘marathon’ indicates the endurance aspect of the event. The focus is development and learning, and the way our team does this is by scheduling a couple of days, usually a Friday and a Monday every quarter, for the Monkeys to unleash their creativity, train their brains and deliver something, quickly. Our WeRoad Monkeys (tech team) organised 3 hackathons, as documented by CPTO Simone Basso, where the first sought to create an analytics tool to understand cost of flights from the major European airports, that coincided with the dates of WeRoad trips. This allows us to see the cost of flights in order to be able to advertise or discount itineraries in an automatic and data-driven way.

💡 My First Hackathon Experience 💡 This past weekend, I participated in my very first hackathon, and what an experience it was! Although my team didn’t win, I totally loved the challenge, the collaboration, and the opportunity to learn and grow. From brainstorming ideas to coding late into the night, every moment was worth it. I’m proud of the progress we made and the lessons I’m taking away from this.
