The recruiting market (and by extension, engineering) actually seems to be bouncing back big time?! After two years of nothing, I've received cold outreach four times in the last month for talent roles (three this week). Two locally for Tesla/PENA re-expansion, and two remote roles in tech/VC. While this is happening, I see multiple folks who were laid off at Tesla getting their jobs back this week. I'm happy at Bill so I'm politely declining, but I'm making as many intros as I can for folks who are qualified that I've worked with before. If that's you, let me know if you're on the market! I used to apply to hundreds of companies and not hear back. When others got interview calls from those same companies, it surprised me. I couldn't understand why my application had been rejected or what I did wrong. I realized I needed to learn current hiring trends to keep up with my competition. Here’s what I did. 1. I tried utilizing LinkedIn’s connection requests to understand who is hiring. Out of the 100 connection requests I could send in a week, I sent 75 to people looking for jobs. I typed in prompts on LinkedIn like: “actively seeking fulltime opportunities” “actively seeking fulltime sde opportunities” “actively seeking fulltime swe opportunities ” - I looked for people who commented “I'm interested” or “[their email]” under hiring activity posts. Even if they like/react to posts that mention hiring activity, I found it helpful to have them as connections. - These connections can be helpful since you can see their activity and, thus, the hiring information on your feed. - I also came across different conferences and webinars that helped me in my search. 2. I focused on sending the remaining 25 connection requests to recruiters. I would shortlist specific companies I wanted to work for and search on LinkedIn. I typed in prompts like: recruiter #hiring NVIDIA talent acquisition #hiring Microsoft - I would look for people who post roles or mention that they are hiring or are willing to refer. - Also, if any of these people interacted with my posts, it would show up in their connection’s feed, increasing my profile visibility and my chances of being hired. - Looking at the comment section of these posts also helped me find people actively interacting with hiring opportunities. I would connect with them. - Staying connected with these people allows me to see their activity on my feed and access the links to the job openings they post. There's nothing worse than having two really strong candidates and only one job opening... but it can be great if you keep track of them! Got to start my morning by making an offer to a "Silver Medalist" candidate who interviewed for a Staff SDET role a few months ago. Engineering manager: "I need to hire for ______ role, before you post it, let's see if this candidate is still on the market." They are. Made an offer the next day. $1,000's of dollars and dozens of hours saved, and a happy engineer joining the team. Hires like this aren't possible at most publicly traded companies due to red tape. New interviews required, goofy policies requiring "cool off periods" from the last interview. All nonsense. Hope my US network had a great July 4th yesterday! Back to work today so if anyone is interested in making a career move now that we are in the second half the year, please drop me a message! Here are some insights into the market over the last 6 months: 🚀 Gradual Rebound in Hiring: The good news is that companies are slowly but surely hiring again. It's a positive sign that the market is stabilizing and opportunities are opening up. 🚀 Roles available for Staff/Senior Software Engineers and Product folks: We spent the first half of the year recruiting Staff Software Engineers, Senior SWE, Product Managers, Product Owners, Product Designers, ML Engineers. (There has still been a slight shortage of executive/managerial tech and product roles). 🚀 Inbound Applications Decline: we have observed a significant drop in inbound applications to job postings. Hopefully this means that more candidates have secured roles over the last 6 months! 🚀 Diversity Hiring Challenges: Diversity hiring hasn't been a top priority for some companies during this period. It's an area that requires ongoing focus and commitment. 🚀 Onsite and Hybrid Models: A number of companies have started implementing 3-5 days in office requirements. I guess the Covid days are well and truly over... 🚀 Focus on Specialized Skills: Demand for specialized skills remains high, with a particular emphasis on areas such as AI, machine learning, cybersecurity, blockchain and cloud computing. This is the living example of "AI will not replace you, but a person with AI will". Intuit plans to layoff 1800 employees (10% of the workforce). But as it seems, they're not doing the layoffs due to financial constraints. They've stated that they will be replacing the Engg, Product, Marketing roles with hires with more AI and Data focused experience or training. Even leadership roles have been affected (SVPs, EVPs). Crazy scenes in hiring really! In my last Webinar, a fellow asked me to bring more AI focused PM content. I was amused, as I thought why would that be so necessary? Well it seems, it's actually driving decisions in companies now. Don't take your companies' AI readiness tests lightly! The time has come to add AI as a skill. #ai #productmanagement
