🌟 Excited to share our latest research published in Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly! 🌟 🔍 How distinct are the nonprofit and for-profit sectors in a world of increasing marketization? Using natural language processing & machine learning 🤖, we analyzed over 600,000 mission statements, uncovering the linguistic and functional attributes that blur—or preserve—the boundaries between sectors. 📊 Key Insights: • While nonprofits and for-profits remain mostly distinct, marketization is driving significant overlap. • Nonprofits showing higher similarity to for-profits tend to prioritize instrumental functions (e.g., task-oriented goals) at the expense of their expressive functions (e.g., value-driven missions). • Although nonprofits exhibit both strong expressive and instrumental functions⚖️, these dimensions are negatively correlated, highlighting an inherent trade-off within the sector. 💡 Why It Matters: Our findings offer a fresh perspective on the hybridization of organizations and raise important concerns about the marketization of the nonprofit sector. 📖 Explore the full study here: https://lnkd.in/e3ZM2ZRx Georg von Schnurbein Center for Philanthropy Studies (CEPS) - Universität Basel University of Basel The Gradel Institute of Charity
