Yes, we need to be seen and heard as children to develop a healthy sense of Self. And more accurately: we need to be believed, belong, feel a felt sense of safety consistently, be understood, accepted, guided, and our unique gifts honored. Oh, and these needs don't just end when we are adults - We also need these very same things in adulthood from our closest relationships, workplaces, communities, and overall cultural context. Believe people. Help them belong. Keep them safe. Provide ADA accommodations. Do all you can to understand folks.🌿 If you/your organization cannot do these things are in a leadership position or are a healthcare practitioner - it's likely that your Trauma and or social conditioning is getting in the way. And with some practice, education, and Trauma processing support...this can and does change.

Being an anti-oppressive practitioner is more than just what we offer to clients in our counselling process and relationships. Anti-oppressive practice cuts through the layers of the profession and asks us to engage in and offer anti-oppressive training, anti-oppressive supervision and anti-oppressive self-care, alongside anti-oppressive practice.
