What are the drivers and barriers of the green bond market in Canada? Catalyzing the growth of green bonds: a closer look at the drivers and barriers of the Canadian green bond market has just been published by Vasundhara Saravade and Olaf Weber in Sustainability Accounting, Management and Policy Journal. See https://lnkd.in/gjH2ACNZ The paper aims to examine the Canadian financial sector’s reaction to opportunities and risks created by the green bond market in a low-carbon and climate-resilient (LCR) economy. We used a concurrent mixed methodological approach that undertakes an online survey and semistructured interviews with critical green bond market stakeholders. The most significant market driver in Canada is the reputational benefit for stakeholders, i.e. its ability to meet the high demand for sustainable finance and the marketing potential of its green credentials. The major market barriers are transactional costs, i.e. additional tracking required for reporting purposes, lack of market liquidity and identification of environmental impact or additionality. Canadian green bonds are also more likely to be evaluated on their green impact than their global market peers. The paper helps create an accounting-based conceptual framework for key motivations and barriers that affect financial decision-making regarding green bonds. We identify economic and policy-related barriers and drivers for green bonds, addressing the financing gap for the LCR economy.

The Aldersgate Group and Frontier Economics have launched an important new report outlining key principles required to ensure that the UK’s regulatory landscape enables nature restoration and net zero, while also supporting economic growth. It finds that to effectively address climate and environmental concerns, regulation must consider the whole of the environment from a multidisciplinary and cross-sectoral perspective. It must also target outcomes and be supported by a full cost-benefit analysis which considers the cost of inaction as well as societal and environmental benefits. The report also calls for regulators to be provided with the funding and expert resources they need to ensure effective enforcement. Olaf Weber and I recently published our journal paper in the Sustainability Accounting, Management and Policy Journal analyzing the Canadian green bond market more closely. This is a first-of-its-kind academic study of the Canadian context that highlights this market's drivers and barriers. Our paper helps create an accounting-based conceptual framework for key motivations and barriers, it discusses the relevance of the transition taxonomy in Canada and provides the following policy recommendations for those in the Canadian market: 📌 Set trackable climate targets and benchmarks toward an low-carbon climate-resilient transition. 📌 When issuing green bonds, stakeholders, such as governments, should also help address the project pipeline gap and introduce new project types, such as climate adaptation or nature-based solutions. 📌 Using a transition taxonomy to anticipate the projects that fall into the green category (green bonds) or the transition category (transition bonds), can reduce the transaction costs posed by the lack of labeling. 📌 Better market legitimacy can be established if there is engagement with more meaningful performance indicators, especially those based on climate data and scientifically-backed performance measurement tools. Climate change is now a stark - and rapidly worsening - reality, and mitigation/adaptation an imperative. Resource mobilisation for this top priority goal will require research in commonly accepted frameworks, and their large scale adoption by key stakeholders like governments, regulators and financial institutions. 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 🤓On April 9th, we had a privilege of hosting Martijn Boermans of De Nederlandsche Bank, who presented his paper “Funding the Fittest? Pricing of Climate Transition Risk in the Corporate Bond Market”. This research is a joint work with Maurice Bun (De Nederlandsche Bank) and Yasmine Van der Straten (University of Amsterdam - Amsterdam Business School). 🔍The authors examined whether corporate bond investors incorporate climate transition risks into their pricing decisions. They combined bond-level holdings data with global firm-level greenhouse gas emissions data, such as bond credit risk, green bond labels and carbon emissions. The researchers’ forward-looking perspective examined how investors value companies’ green innovation efforts. 🌍The results show a positive transition risk premium, highlighting the significance of carbon emissions in determining capital costs. Companies with higher carbon emissions have experienced a higher bond yield spread, indicating strong dominance of carbon emissions on pricing dynamics in comparison to other factors. In addition, the results suggest a reward for emission-intensive firms that engage in green innovation, especially among European institutional investors. This emphasizes the importance of integrating environmental considerations into investment decisions, aligning with EU initiatives to promote sustainable finance. 👏We would like to thank Martijn Boermans and his coauthors for their engagement with climate transition risk and findings on sustainable investment decision-making. Our paper, titled "Local content policies: Knowledge stock and future directions for research and policy making in view of the sustainability agenda", is now published in Environmental Science and Policy. Local Content Policies (LCPs) aim to boost employment and economic growth in resource-rich countries, but in light of global sustainability goals, they must evolve. Our research offers a comprehensive review of LCPs literature and explores how these policies can be reimagined to address sustainability challenges.
