David Jeppsen taught me so much in this NTT #NTTXC podcast interview about the importance of #AIPolicy. The European Union and the United States Federal Government are working on policies to protect us and also enable the adoption of #AI in every aspect of our lives, but with privacy, private property, and security in mind. Check out this fascinating interview on what's happening from a policy perspective for AI in the two largest economies in the world.

The Challenge: Recent surveys reveal that 66% of IT Directors in the UK fear the nation is lagging in AI development. The unpredictable regulatory environment, coupled with lower investment levels compared to the USA and Germany, complicates progress. AI Regulation: The question on everyone’s mind… 🔍 It’s striking how almost every conversation about AI eventually circles back to one core issue: regulation. The big questions are: • Can we regulate AI when the tech evolves faster than policies? • Should we regulate it at all, knowing it might stifle innovation? (Let’s not ignore that most frontier AI firms are U.S.-based.) • What exactly are we regulating when defining "high-impact risks" feels so subjective? Here’s my take: ⬇️ 1️⃣ Most AI use cases are low-risk. AI tools in businesses—like ML demand forecasting or using LLMs for research—are often no different from traditional software. These need minimal regulation. 2️⃣ Existing laws already cover many risks. Regulations like GDPR and the DSA address critical issues such as data privacy and accountability. 3️⃣ The challenge? High-impact systems. Applications like social scoring or autonomous weapons have global stakes. Regulating these requires multilateral agreements. (Though, let’s face it—those feel less likely since the last U.S. election: https://buff.ly/4fIEavw.)
