🌍 𝐇𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐖𝐞𝐥𝐟𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞 Last month the Centre for Environment-friendly Energy Research HYDROGENi has contributed its hydrogen expertise to this year’s guidance document for policymakers, developed by SINTEF and Norges teknisk-naturvitenskapelige universitet (NTNU). The #2024 edition, unveiled at #Arendalsuka — Norway’s leading political festival — focuses on securing energy supply and welfare in #Norway and #Europe. Here are some of its highlights: 💡 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬 As Europe strives for independence from Russian gas in light of recent geopolitical shifts, Norway’s role in energy security remains crucial, particularly through gas exports. However, with the #EU aiming for #climate #neutrality by #2050, future investments will shift towards renewable energy production, requiring Norway to rethink its approach to offshore wind, hydrogen development, and carbon capture and storage (CCS). 📄 The document, “Hvordan sikre energiforsyning og velferd i Norge og Europa” (“𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘰 𝘚𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘌𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘺 𝘚𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘭𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘞𝘦𝘭𝘧𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘕𝘰𝘳𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘌𝘶𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘦”), offers three key recommendations for Norwegian politicians to strengthen collaboration with Europe: 📌 Boost renewable energy production, supported by energy efficiency and infrastructure development. 📌 Make value chains for natural gas emission-free by 2050, with new fields targeted for 2040. 📌 Collaborate on large infrastructure projects, including CCS, hydrogen, and offshore grids. ‘Namibia, Africa cannot do energy transition alone’: Minister of mines and energy Tom Alweendo says the green energy transition cannot be achieved in isolation, but will require collaboration on a global level. Speaking during the Global Africa Green Hydrogen Summit in Windhoek yesterday, Alweendo said Africa has the advantage of natural resources and will play a key role in the transition. “We also know this energy transition is a global phenomenon that cannot be resolved by one country or one continent. It is a global situation that needs to be resolved by all of us,” Alweendo said. He said collaboration between producing and consuming countries are crucial. Alweendo said clear standards have to be put in place on both sides of the value chain. “We need to understand what the standards are going forward. What are we going to do about transporting this energy, for example?” he asked. Alweendo said collaboration is also needed to discuss how to finance the energy industry. “We also need to collaborate on issues like how we are going to fund some of these projects,” he said. He said although green hydrogen has garnered market visibility, the industry is still not well developed. Additionally Alweendo said the country has an industrial stategy, but it has to be clear on what hydrogen would be used for. “As Namibia, we have already obviously introduced our industrial strategies, but we have also realised that hydrogen itself is not really one of the issues. What do we do with hydrogen?” he asked. Speaking during the event, vice president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has cautioned that as Namibia is moving towards industrialisation, the country and Africa should not damage the environment. “Namibia is committed to ensuring that a fair balance is struck between economic development and ecological preservation,” she said. She said the country offers a rich and welcoming environment that is well suited to hosting an impactful green industrialisation ecosystem. “Namibia has rich deposits of the minerals required to build clean industries, such as critical rare earth elements and lithium. We also help our Zambian neighbours trade their copper – a key ingredient for sustainable industries – with global markets,” Nandi-Ndaitwah said. #Bulgaria Leads Regional Initiative to #LowerElectricityPrices at COP29 Azerbaijan 🌍 As reported by Euractiv, Bulgaria announced a transformative initiative at #COP29 in #Baku to reduce electricity prices through enhanced energy interconnections across southeastern #Europe. This ambitious project, led by Bulgarian Energy Minister Vladimir Malinov, garnered the support of seven EU countries and #Azerbaijan, showcasing a strong commitment to regional energy collaboration. Key highlights of the initiative: 🔹 Improving cross-border energy links to facilitate the flow of clean, affordable energy. 🔹 Sharing knowledge to tackle the challenges of integrating #renewable energy into regional power systems. 🔹 Aiming to transport renewable energy from #NorthernEurope and #Egypt to central Europe through upgraded connections. The project has received strong backing from energy ministers of Greece, Romania, the Czech Republic, Italy, Belgium, Moldova, Hungary, and Azerbaijan. A follow-up meeting is planned in Sofia this February to advance discussions and define next steps. Mr. Gopal Baglay assumed charge as the High Commissioner of India to Australia in January 2024. He was the High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka from May 2020 to December 2023. The Spanish economy is evolving to achieve climate neutrality. This paradigm shift presents an opportunity to promote employment and improve its competitiveness, due to the emergence of new sectors related to low-emission technologies, such as hydrogen and renewable fuels, biomethane or the circular economy, which may be key to reindustrialising Spain in the coming years. One of the industrial sectors in the process of transformation is refining, which employs 200,000 people in Spain. Another emerging sector is renewable hydrogen, a gas that may be key to reducing emissions from the industrial sector. Finally, there is biomethane, which is a renewable gas produced from organic waste that can be injected into the current gas network and used as a substitute for natural gas in industries and homes. The need to find talent to undertake the energy transition is one of the great challenges that both Spain and the rest of the European Union must face. For example, the wind sector – the main source of electricity generation in our country – is facing a lack of qualified professionals and by 2030 it will need more than 67,000 employees, according to calculations by the Wind Energy Business Association (AEE). This Tronso carbon energy station is likely to be replaced by decentralised charging stations as Norway 🇳🇴 uses its huge oil industry to switch to renewables . This contrasts to the Netherlands 🇳🇱, Germany 🇩🇪 and the UK 🇬🇧 who are moving from an efficient carbon energy industry to renewables at pace causing maximum prices at peak and in Germany rapid deindustrialisation and in the Netherlands an inability to supply energy at peak without using imported coal .The UK has exported a lot of heavy industry to China ( coal ) post the Thatcher deindustrialisation . Norway has enhanced its transition using Chinese sourced Evs while Germany and the EU attempt to exclude these cars largely due to France . We need to finance the transition seems to be a fundamental economic fact that politicians find inconvenient as group think over net zero seems to trump net zero .

A consortium led by Nelson Mandela University and Ikigai Group has won a UK Government grant under the South Africa-UK PACT programme to deliver an innovative feasibility study to explore the viability of Green Hydrogen Production and Export Infrastructure from South Africa's Eastern Cape region to global markets, including the UK, Europe, and Japan. Green hydrogen, produced through electrolysis using renewable energy sources, offers a clean and versatile alternative to conventional fossil fuels. The feasibility study will evaluate the potential for establishing green hydrogen production facilities in South Africa's Eastern Cape region and developing the necessary infrastructure for export, including port facilities and transportation networks. Stakeholder engagement will be integral to the process, to ensure alignment with local communities, government agencies, and industry partners. The article below focuses on a brilliant new project which is being created in order to benefit the production of green hydrogen. The project has planned to help multiple countries through green hydrogen production and this will be made possible through the export infrastructure that the project will also focus on.
