🚨 Workload Spikes: A Major Cause of Injuries Injuries often occur when bowlers and their coaches abruptly increase their workload. Sudden spikes in activity, going from minimal to extensive training in a short period, are a primary culprit. The @pacelablimited “Foundation course”includes a workload management module to teach athletes how to optimise training and performance while minimising injury risks. This module emphasises understanding and applying the acute to chronic workload ratio (ACWR). The ACWR compares the short-term (acute) workload to the long-term (chronic) workload a bowler has completed. Maintaining a balanced ACWR is essential for fast bowlers to avoid overtraining or undertraining. • High ACWR: Indicates overtraining, leading to fatigue and increased injury risk. • Low ACWR: Suggests undertraining, resulting in poor performance and higher injury susceptibility when workloads increase suddenly. Injuries occur when the workload surpasses the body’s capacity to adapt. Recent research shows maintaining high chronic loads can reduce injury risk. Consistent, high training loads have been linked to better performance across sports. Fast bowlers with appropriate high chronic training loads reduce injury risk and enhance performance. Regular exposure to load builds resilience and physical qualities needed for high-intensity competition. However I believe Issues with ACWR occur in modern day bowling practices. Problems arise when ACWR includes ‘training deliveries,’ as submaximal deliveries in training can distort the total workload picture. Research indicates injuries typically occur during games, not training. This discrepancy is likely due to the suboptimal intensity of training, with an overemphasis on volume rather than quality. You cannot include the total balls bowled in training as part of the overall picture. They simply are not intense enough, based on bowling speed @pocketradar to disrupt equilibrium and create change . Today was another double run - just because. Do you need any other excuse. If you enjoy something why not do it twice?! Two trail runs - a lovely catch-up one with my friend Mel, and the other was a hash run. Hash running, or hashing, is done all over the world. One or two “hares” or volunteer runners, lay a trail marked with dots of flour, and the hashers try to follow the route. Every now and then there is a white marked circle ⭕️ - this indicates a checkpoint - and here the hashers have decisions to make - which route should you follow? So you all split up and try the various routes, and the hasher who finds the flour again shouts ON-ON to indicate they’ve picked up the trail, so everyone else has to retrace their steps and follow the on-on. And sometimes there are false trails marked with an F, so everyone has to retrace their steps to try to find the right route. There’s a great team spirit amongst the hashers Sometimes you’re ahead other times you’re behind. Kind of like life really, and the checkpoint is the time so review - are you on the right path? Do you need to retrace your steps a bit? Do you need help from a coach shouting on-on to lead the way? Even though it’s my downtime I very often find myself reflecting on how hashing mimics both life and business. Are you a trail setter or a trail follower?
