California’s passage of Proposition 4 provides $1.5 billion for wildfire resilience! … On November 5th, Californians passed Proposition 4, the first-ever climate bond to go before California voters. The proposition provides $10 billion in bond funds for critical wildfire, flood protection, and other climate resilience projects around the state, including $1.5 billion for wildfire resilience. Fire suppression will always be a part of managing wildfire risk, even as we move towards achieving more resilience across the landscape while also adapting to the changing climate and wildfire environment. Often, wildfires burn in remote, rugged landscapes can be physically and emotionally challenging, to say the least. Add to that the increasing intensity of fire behavior, along with rapidly changing conditions, and it becomes an environment that a select few are uniquely equipped to manage. Today we honor those few – the wildland fire workforce. National Wildland Firefighter Day recognizes the hard work and devotion of the wildland firefighters and support personnel who are the backbone of the wildland fire community. The wildland fire workforce, made up of federal, state, local, Tribal, military, rural, contract, and support personnel, work diligently to protect lives, property, infrastructure, and natural and cultural resources. This year, CWI is especially grateful to the wildland fire community currently tackling the Basin Fire in the Sierra Nevada, bordering the site of our planned Teakettle Prescribed Burn. The Teakettle Prescribed Burn, spanning 3,300 acres within the Teakettle Experimental Forest on the Sierra National Forest, stands as a pivotal effort in landscape-scale prescribed fire management and implementation and is located in very precious old-growth. It is a step toward substantially reducing the risk that catastrophic fire, such as the Basin Fire and previous Rough and Creek Fires, can pose to our ecosystems and landscapes. We are hopeful the Basin Fire won’t impact the Teakettle Experimental Forest - so that we can reintroduce fire into the area under more controlled conditions - and deeply appreciate the hard work by all of the fireline personnel to try to get a handle on the fire. Funding for the Teakettle Prescribed Burn was provided by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection’s Forest Health Program as part of the California Climate Investments Program. One of our passions at CREW Trust is talking about wetlands and the amazing ecosystem services they deliver at no cost to our communities. Among the most important of the services that the Corkscrew Regional Ecosystem Watershed (CREW) wetlands provide to communities in Lee and Collier counties is water storage. As a form of natural infrastructure, wetlands collect, hold, and clean water before slowly releasing it to lower elevations. Water storage by wetlands not only promotes the decreased likelihood of flood crests in our neighborhoods in the aftermath of intense rain events, but wetlands also help ensure that our groundwater is sustainably recharged and that any runoff that eventually reaches our estuaries and bays is far cleaner than it would otherwise be. CREW’s wetlands are amazing miracles of natural engineering, providing us for free what would otherwise cost hundreds of millions of dollars for human beings to design, construct, operate and maintain. Here are some eye-popping photos of CREW’s Flint Pen Strand in the days following Hurricane Ian in 2022. These lands are doing what they do best… holding water that likely would have ended up in the densely inhabited neighborhoods of Bonita Springs and North Naples before flowing into our coastal waters, carrying along with it sediments and other contaminants that could negatively impact the long-term health of our beaches and fisheries. #environmentaleducation #conservation #CREW #environment #water #bonitasprings

The state Threatened Florida sandhill crane (FSC) nesting season is upon us (February to April). FWC recommends both pre-project planning surveys and surveys immediately prior to permitted land disturbance/construction. FSC's nest in shallow marshes and forage with their hatchlings up to 1,500 feet from nest sites, often in adjacent grassy fields, pasturelands, sod farms, golf courses, etc. Active nests are required to be avoided by at least 400 feet. Watershed security funding is trickling out. We will need a torrent to futureproof our rivers, lakes, and forests. The B.C. Wildlife Federation and its partners have assessed and restored dozens of wetlands, rebuilding the natural infrastructure that kept our watersheds in balance for millennia. Natural, low-tech solutions are fast becoming a viable alternative to pipes, concrete and pavement to mitigate drought, wildfires and flooding. Building beaver dam analogues (BDAs) is one such innovative strategy for holding water on the landscape to regulate streamflow, creating wildlife and fish habitat, and keeping soils and forests well hydrated. “Our watersheds look much different today compared with pre-colonial times,” said Jennifer Rogers, Beaver Restoration Assessment Lead. “We are putting it back the way that it was, by building beaver dam analogues from natural materials that provide crucial environmental services.” Read the full Op/Ed by Randy Shore, Public Relations and Communications Specialist with the BCWF at https://lnkd.in/gx-shmF7
