Had a great time attending the #DocNYC festival this year. As with most industries, #creatoreconomy was one of the key buzzwords, with a focus on innovative #directdistribution strategies. Here are three key takeaways for #filmmakers looking to launch their next project: 1. Know your audience and how to build it. Understanding the core demographic for your story will allow you to better understand how to take the film to them, whether it’s through premium local viewings and pop-up events or targeted online screenings. Nurturing a following early is a great way to capture the attention of studios for projects that may not otherwise have big names attached. 2. Cultivate brand partners. Select companies, organizations, and content creators who align with your vision and would be willing to partner with you to organically spotlight your project. Social media outreach can often be more effective than traditional P&A in today’s market and is significantly less expensive. 3. Leverage hybrid distribution strategies. Utilize data-driven direct-to-audience distribution platforms (Kinema, GATHR, and Jolt had a presence at the festival) to supplement traditional media. Impact producers are another great resource to help spread your message. There’s no one size fits all when it comes to making and selling a film, but understanding the changing media landscape is crucial. With sustained engagement and a direct audience connection, producers and filmmakers can take advantage of this new environment and maximize their success.
