One of the things I love most about working in the tertiary education sector is that my brain is always being challenged to think differently. In a time where international student caps are being hotly discussed, this HEDx podcast covers a great debate about how innovative and relevant higher education is - with some surprising thoughts from key leaders. The very nature of having a constructive debate such as this actually points to one of the biggest reasons why we need the tertiary education sector to grow - change shape, yes, but to continue to inspire students to stretch their thinking and find ways to express different points of view.

🚀 Maximising the Economic and Social Value of Research Portfolios: Successful Completion of Our Pilot Programme! 🚀 I was thrilled to see the successful delivery of the final session of our latest innovative training programme 'Research to Value', which aims to unlock the latent commercial opportunities hidden within research portfolios. Great to work with Zach Sorrells to create this programme after we had a flash of inspiration talking to Orla Kelly who commissioned it. It saw pairs of professional service staff and researchers buddy up to learn an innovation management process to define commercial opportunities and the unknowns associated with them. The pairs learned ‘fast and cheap’ methods essential for validating and quantifying opportunities to fit within the time constraints of competing work priorities. This 'live case study' methodology ensured the programme was output-focused and an investment of time rather than taking time out. Six pairs from different Scottish Universities took part and the feedback has been amazing. We’ll share more fully what we’ve learned when we’ve completed the evaluation. If you want to hear more about the programme we're hosting a webinar in July - Sign up now ⇨ https://lnkd.in/gKiAZT8w Thank you to everyone who contributed to this success! AAU is on a mission to shape the future. Today, I had the privilege of discussing the next Framework Program with Cecilie Brøkner from Innovation Fund Denmark and Director General for Research and Innovation Marc Lemaitre in Brussels. The complex challenges facing our societies demand a fresh scientific approach. Collaboration among policymakers, businesses, civil society, and scientists from diverse disciplines is crucial. It's about setting aside disciplinary boundaries and working together from the outset. As universities we must actively engage in partnerships, knowledge circulation, and interaction with society around us. This collaborative spirit is at the core of AAU's mission-oriented approach. I firmly believe that universities play a pivotal role in driving change and prosperity, and by prioritizing mission-oriented research, we align with the goals of the European Commission and pave the way for meaningful progress. Working with the team at Aurecon on the development of our new strategic partnership has been incredibly rewarding. Since 2022, we have used our combined resources and expertise, to explore how artificial intelligence can improve health, climate change, sustainability, and resilience outcomes. Our collaboration demonstrates how universities and industry can proactively shape the future. We’ve already seen promising results, including the development of the Carbon Sketcher tool by one of our bright PhD students, Juliana Croffi Calixto, a $200k Circular Economy Development Grant, which will examine a SA Water PVC pipe recycling scheme. We have also hosted a thought leadership dinner focused on the next 150 years of AI and the digitisation of health, featuring key senior leaders from the government, Aurecon, and the University of Adelaide. Furthermore, Aurecon will join us on our August Senior Executive Mission to discuss their expansions in SE Asia and explore joint training and global engagement opportunities. In June 2024, we signed an MoU that formalises our relationship. To celebrate, we produced a video to highlight the breadth of our future-focussed collaboration. In the video, Aurecon CEO William Cox and I discuss how this partnership is set to elevate Adelaide University and help us achieve our goal of being Australia’s most industry-engaged university. #UniversityOfAdelaide #Aurecon #Partnership #Innovation #Sustainability #AI #ClimateChange #Health #Defense #Education #IndustryCollaboration Corey McDonald William Cox Paula Mifsud
