So many people take for granted their always working faucet and toilet. Unless you are living off a well and using a septic tank this is a good rough diagram of most wastewater plants…follow the path of your sewer pipe feeding into the collections systems. As we deal with more contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) expect more advanced treatment stages. Even in the next few years utilities will need to spend a fortune to upgrade their facilities (or pay regional consolidators such as Metro Water Recovery) to handle just 6 PFAS out of 12,000+ “forever chemicals” so meeting just the minimum is not cost effective in the long run. Consumers will have to pressure manufacturers to find safer alternatives whenever possible. Public Utility Commissons will have to approve new higher rates and how environmental justice costs will be shared. And because we are running out of water, arid areas or regions with contaminated groundwater will need to use treated wastewater as a raw source for blended drinking water treatment plants. Even now you will find seasonal rivers where the only running water is the treated wastewater from upstream - a form of de facto direct potable reuse (DPR). True DPR will involve additional advanced treatment (probably co-located at either the wastewater or water treatment plant) with pipes running from wastewater treatment to drinking water treatment plants. Indirect potable reuse is when the treated wastewater is injected or percolated into an aquifer or river with existing water so it is a blended (not 100% treated wastewater) raw source. All water is recycled so this is the current default. #climateadaptation #wastewatertreatment #utilitymanagement #environmentaljustice
