The University of Glasgow has joined forces with leading biotech company EVOTEC to develop an innovative drug aimed at improving heart disease treatment. Evotec will support work being undertaken by Professor Will Fuller and his team to co-develop small molecules targeting a well validated ion transporter implicated in cardiac arrhythmias. The backing is in the form of beLAB1407 Funding which was launched by Evotec and pharma company Bristol Myers Squibb to identify new disease-modifying therapeutic targets and platforms with the goal to develop these to new #spinout companies. The beLAB1407 award to Professor Fuller’s team represents the first for the University since the scheme – which bridges discovery science into investment-ready opportunities ready for preclinical development – was widened out last year to include more institutions. The team’s new findings offer the opportunity to address an age-old problem in securing selectivity which has hampered the development of safe and effective therapeutics drugs for this important class of targets. Using a combination of Evotec’s medicinal chemistry expertise coupled to the cardiovascular know-how of the Glasgow team, the project aims to deliver novel hits with proof of concept in a variety of models. Business Development Update: Our CTO, Dr. Vivek K. Vishnudas, recently presented our E2-centric targeted protein degradation platform at the 15th Annual Drug Discovery Innovation Forum in Berlin. The positive response from industry innovation leaders highlights the potential of this technology to open new pathways for molecular glues and heterobifunctional chimeras. A core strength of our platform is its focus on selectivity and specificity, utilizing a 1,000 Ro3 proprietary compound library to optimize ligands. By leveraging the E2 enzyme, which is more highly expressed than E3, we avoid using CRBN or other thalidomide-based ligands. This enhances safety, efficacy, and improves manufacturing efficiency by reducing the complexity of production processes. This innovation is set to unlock new therapeutic possibilities, particularly in oncology and neurology, as we explore strategic partnerships to advance clinical development. Recap of Sachs ELSF Forum ⬇ TBD Pharmatech CEO, Andrus Tasa, participated in the #Sachs_ELSF Forum held on February 28-29 in Zurich, Switzerland. The #Sachs_ELSF Forum, part of the #SachsSpringLifeSciencesWeek, delved into the latest trends and innovations in the biotechnology industry. Attendees had the opportunity to engage with thought leaders in the biotech field, with over 400 participants including investors, top executives from pharmaceutical and biotech companies. The program covered diverse topics ranging from obesity and cancer treatment to the needs and opportunities in rare and orphan diseases' therapies. According to Andrus Tasa, the Sachs forum fostered inspiring discussions with both investors and biotech leaders. Several ideas emerged from these dialogues that could potentially lead to future collaborations. Of particular interest was gaining insights into the specifics of innovative compounds needed for clinical trials of drug candidates developed by biotech companies. Is a new method to prepare supraproteins by combining depletion forces and freezing possible? It certainly is!  A novel method of delivering protein-based medicine has been developed by a team of researchers from TU/e led by Professor Remco Tuinier and Professor Ilja Voets in collaboration with dsm-firmenich Biomedical. Protein-based medicines are a relatively new field of medicine, with immunotherapies to combat cancer as the most prominent example. With the findings of the team in preparing the necessary supraproteins recently published in the @Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, it is now up to pharmaceutical companies to use this method to improve or develop new protein-based treatments.
