In an exciting move in Western Australia's Pilbara region two First Nations-backed solar projects have been cleared for construction - one that will help to power Rio Tinto’s Chichester iron ore operations and one that will be used to generate electricity on Horizon Power’s coastal network. Western Australia’s regional Development Assessment Panel on Wednesday morning delivered the final approvals for construction of a 150 megawatt (MW) solar farm by the Yindjibarndi Energy Corporation (YEC) in partnership with AcenAustralia. The Jinbi solar farm in July won environmental approval for development on land covered by the Yindjibarndi Native Title Determination Area, marking the first project assessed as part of the WA government’s Green Energy Approvals Initiative. Lerwick Port Authority is a founder member of a Scottish Offshore Wind Ports Alliance (SOWPA), launched today (Wednesday 15 May 2024) by the country’s leading energy ports to target the developing offshore windfarm market. The initiative was revealed on the first day of the two-day All-Energy Exhibition and Conference in Glasgow where the Port Authority is a participant. The Alliance’s objectives include optimising operations through identifying opportunities to enhance regional competitiveness, driving efficiencies, fast-tracking required expertise, sharing knowledge, and addressing common challenges. Captain Calum Grains, Port Authority Chief Executive, said: “The aim is a more coordinated approach to promote the scope and scale of Scottish ports’ capabilities and potential in the face of overseas competition. Building on the ports’ involvement to date, the creation of SOWPA is a timely and important step in moving the sector forward in a huge market.” The Port Authority is represented on the Alliance’s steering group and features on its website. This week we learned that Elicio & BayWa r.e. Global won the first Commercial Floating Offshore Wind tender in France (AO5 tender). A 250 MW OFF wind farm will be developed in South Bretagne with an 86.45 €/MWh winning offer. This value will be updated in two different tranches, before COD and after COD with several Price Indexes. With this tender, France has already announced the winners of 4.8 GW of developments. Later this year we will know the outcome of 4 more tenders (AO6, 7 & 8) that will allow the development of 3 additional GWs, both floating and bottom-fixed - Most of the big players have participated proving that France has attracted significant interest. As of today, France has 1.5 GW in operation, 1.5 GW under construction, 1.9 under development, and 3 GW more will be communicated in 2024. The innovative project, situated in the Gulf of Taranto off the Calabrian coast of Corigliano-Rossano, boasts cutting-edge technology and design. SolarDuck, a spin-off of Damen Shipyards, has ingeniously designed elevated solar platforms crafted from offshore-grade aluminum to withstand rough waters. H2Carrier AS has applied to NVE (Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate) for the development of two large #onshore #windfarms in Finnmark county, #Norway, in line with government initiatives. In partnership with one of the leading port design experts – the Dutch company Witteveen+Bos – a study on adjusting the port of Ventspils to serve offshore wind farms has been finalized. The researchers have stated two central conclusions: 🔹 the port of Ventspils can already offer sufficient services to the developers of offshore wind farms, 🔹 to make full use of its potential, it is crucial to construct an effective terminal near the Northern Pier in the port of Ventspils – OFFSHORE INDUSTRY PORT. Igors Udodovs, the Deputy CEO of the Freeport of Ventspils: “We have chosen to follow this development path gradually, beginning with assessing the existing potential and prospects. Thanks to our collaborative efforts with Witteveen+Bos, a globally renowned organization in this sector, currently we have a strategy, justification, and calculations available so that offshore wind farms can get the finest service in Ventspils.” Christiaan Loeber, Technical manager of the Witteveen+Bos expert team: “Witteveen+Bos investigated the port of Ventspils’s potential offer to offshore wind farm developers. Best practices for the construction and the upkeep of offshore wind farms at European ports were examined as part of the review, and functional requirements for terminals were established. The suitability of existing port terminals for the requirements of offshore wind farm developers was assessed based on these factors. At the same time, expansion possibilities to the north of the existing jetty were explored, encompassing the establishment of further jetties, grounds, and terminals. Oskars Zivtiņš, the CEO of Co., Ltd. “Witteveen+Bos Latvia”: “The experts of the company Witteveen+Bos concluded that the port of Ventspils would already be ready to offer its aids for offshore wind farm developers after evaluating the port’s compliance with the functional requirements, which are set in other European ports for the construction and management of offshore wind farm projects. Building new terminals at the Northern Port is feasible by breaking up the process into logical and investment-based segments. The offshore floating wind and offshore floating solar solutions will support Italy to achieve the decarbonization goals and the partial independency from import of energy sources from outside Italy. Given the geopolitical challenges we do see in the last years, this is becoming imperative for each country and in particular for Italy which traditionally does import its energy sources from other countries. In Italy, a lot of players have been already investing a lot of money for ensuring seabed licenses and especially for achieving the EIA approval milestone. This has been quite bold and risky for them. Finally, the EU-commission has approved the FER II decree which now must be signed by the Italian Government. Italy does have a good knowledge of O&G through experience of some industry giants, but will need external help for making all the plans becoming reality. Norway and the Norwegian Companies members of the Norwegian Offshore Wind cluster might be a key player for achieving the goals Italy has just ahead. The Bulgarian Ministry of Energy has initiated two renewable energy and storage tenders totaling BGN 535 million to support the development of 1,425 MW of solar and wind capacity along with 350 MW of energy storage. These tenders, part of Bulgaria’s recovery and sustainability plan, exclude the agriculture, forestry, and fishery sectors. The first tender offers BGN 107.6 million for projects between 200 kW and 2 MW, aiming for at least 200 MW of renewable energy and 100 MW of storage. The second, with BGN 427.5 million, targets larger projects to achieve at least 940 MW of renewable generation and 200 MW of storage. Financing covers up to 50% of eligible costs, with submission deadlines by June 12, 2024. This move aligns with Bulgaria's energy transition goals, including a coal phase-out by 2038 and significant PV capacity expansion, nearing its 2030 target of 3.2 GW. #solarenergy #bulgaria #cisolar2024 #solar
