The concept of the third place is not new but the vocabulary to explain it is. As our society marches into the future we are becoming more isolated to just our workplace and home. Sometimes, those are the same place thanks to technology. There was a 43% reduction in spending on youth and community services between 2014 and 2021. Community hubs closed. E.g. 1,243 council-run youth centres across England and Wales were closed between 2010-23. Local park and recreation agencies have the power to foster growth, learning, and belonging through... 🌱Community events and celebrations 🌱Visual and performing arts 🌱Cultural relevancy and humility When culturally relevant spaces, programs and services are provided, community members, including staff, develop a sense of belonging, inclusion and appreciation. They embrace, celebrate and value the identities, traditions and experiences of others. This also creates a practice of cultural humility, a dynamic and lifelong process focusing on self-reflection, personal critique and acknowledging one's own biases. Park and recreation professionals, every day, support community health and well-being across seven interconnected dimensions. As I watched children and officers unite in rhythm, it became clear: collaboration fosters trust and strengthens relationships. These events highlight a key aspect of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). How can green spaces bring people together? Having access to green spaces can offer many opportunities for connection and socialisation. This can be through spending time with friends and families 👨👩👦 at a summer picnic; helping children 🧒 learn how to make new friends and play; or meeting new people 👋 at outdoor park events. Green spaces can improve community cohesion by allowing different social groups to interact, bond and grow attached to their local parks 🍃 These spaces are free and welcome to all, making them inclusive and accessible which reduces obstacles to socialising for vulnerable groups of people (e.g. disabled people, ethnic minorities, the youth and elderly, and those with financial difficulties). We must value our green spaces and parks to encourage community engagement and ensure that there are available and welcoming spaces for everyone 💚 (Design created by Sara Lopez)
