No Time to Grow Your Own Food? Embrace a Self-Sustainable City! In today's fast-paced world, many of us struggle to find the time to grow our own food. Between work commitments, family responsibilities, and the hustle of daily life, the thought of tending to a garden often falls by the wayside. Yet, the benefits of growing your own produce are immense—better nutrition, reduced carbon footprint, and the joy of harvesting your own food. But what if you could enjoy these benefits without the burden of gardening? This is where the concept of a self-sustainable city comes into play. These innovative communities are designed to integrate sustainable living practices, allowing residents to enjoy fresh, locally grown food without dedicating hours to cultivation. In a self-sustainable city, community gardens and orchards flourish, maintained by skilled farmers and volunteers who share a passion for sustainable agriculture. This creates an opportunity for residents to participate in harvesting while learning about the benefits of organic farming. You can enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables, engage with your neighbors, and embrace a lifestyle that prioritizes health and well-being—all without the daily grind of maintaining a personal garden. By choosing to live in a self-sustainable city, you not only simplify your life but also contribute to a greener planet. It’s a win-win solution for those who want to prioritize their health and the environment without the constraints of time. Curious about how our self-sustainable city can help you enjoy the perks of fresh food? Why celebrate bee day? For centuries #bees, among the hardest working creatures on the planet, have benefited people, plants and the #environment. By carrying pollen from one flower to another, #bees and other pollinators enable not only the production of an abundance of fruits, nuts and seeds, but also more variety and better quality, contributing to food security and nutrition. To raise awareness of the importance of #pollinators, the threats they face and their contribution to sustainable development, the #UnitedNations designated 20 May as #WorldBeeDay. Get involved with World Bee Day by doing something for the bees. Here are a few ideas below: * Create a #wildlife garden. * Plant bee-friendly plants. * Grow bee-friendly container displays. * Build a bug hotel. * Read up and get environmentally savvy. Today bees, pollinators, and many other insects are declining in abundance. This day provides an opportunity for all of us – whether we work for governments, organizations or civil society or are concerned citizens – to promote actions that will protect and enhance pollinators and their habitats, improve their abundance and diversity, and support the sustainable development of #beekeeping. I just received my weekly delivery of vegetables from the garden run by a Bike Scout with the people from the local community - by bicycle, of course! Before this, it was a big bag of lettuce, and before that it was chili peppers, papayas, herbs, and many others. All locally grown. I didn't ask to receive vegetables from the garden because I prefer that the community members who work there reap the benefits of their work whether for selling to others or for personal use. I receive these awesome garden produce because these are actually what's left over after everyone else have gotten their share from the weekly harvest. It's barely a dozen eggplants this time, but this is a really big win for us as a community because none of the people who take care of the garden are doing it because of a project. They just realized the value and have invested their time and effort into making the garden productive. It's a big win for us because out of all the food sustainability projects that we started with many years ago with larger organizations both local and international - ours is the only one that still exists and is actually productive and profitable for the community! Not bad for a small, local, and unfunded movement of ordinary people who just want to do extraordinary things for each other. If a disaster happens, our community has a network of gardens. If those are destroyed, we still have our seeds and we now have the skills, knowledge, and understanding of the value of working together. We will just plant more. This is the power of community. #wearebikescouts
