As I'm packing my bag for the #RailsWorld 2024 that starts with Day 0 tomorrow, I couldn't be more excited! This sold-out (again!) conference, organized by the Rails Foundation, is bringing together Ruby people from around the globe. Why this year's event is so special: Last year, Vladimir Dementyev and I had the honor of being selected as speakers at the inaugural Rails World. 🥰 This year, we're thrilled to attend without the pressure of full talks—or so we thought! Plot twist: We've both been chosen for lightning talks! I'll share my emotions from re-starting the local Ruby meetup in the SF Bay Area, while Vova will dive into running Rails on WebAssembly and in-browser. But wait, there's more! We're joined by a legend from Evil Martians: the Editor-in-Chief of our beloved tech blog, Martian Chronicles. It's Travis Turner's first big Rails conference, and we can't wait to see it through his fresh eyes. Speaking of fresh perspectives, Rails continues to be the go-to for startups shipping fast. Hence, we're hosting a "Startups on Rails" dinner with our friends from Whop 💙 on Day 1. It's already overbooked—we'll need to make it bigger next time! The conference is being held in Toronto, the home of Shopify—probably the largest Rails monolith in the world. With $7B in Revenue for 2023, Shopify is the proof that Rails scales! They're rolling out the red carpet and making attendees feel incredibly welcome. 🇨🇦❤️ The most exciting part? DHH and the Rails Core team are set to announce Rails 8! It's packed with surprises, but many things are already expected: Rails 8 is reducing infrastructure dependencies and improving developer tooling. One big change: less reliance on Redis. New features like Solid Cache, Solid Queue, and database-backed ActionCable are moving workloads to the database. With NVMe SSDs, it's "fast enough" for most Rails apps. Simplifying production deployments FTW! There's a ton more: authentication generator, support for PWAs, Kamal for deployments, and so on. I'm pretty sure many surprises are waiting to be uncovered on Thursday! Huge shoutout to Amanda Perino and the team for putting this event together. The Ruby community is known for its friendliness, and Rails World is the perfect embodiment of that spirit. ⭐️ Can't wait to make new friends, reconnect with old ones, and soak in all the Ruby goodness. If you're attending, come say hi! And if not, follow along with #RailsWorld 2024. The future of Rails is bright, and it's built by all of us. Thank you ❤️

REST lets you move extremely fast. There are no built-in rules or constraints, so you can build whatever you want. This is amazing if you’re building APIs for your own team to consume. But if you want to ship an API to people _outside_ your team, then too much freedom is a problem. There are thousands of REST APIs out there, and every single one of them is a snowflake with unique quirks. Snowflake APIs suck, because they’re harder to integrate with. You have a lot less freedom when building with GraphQL. There are unavoidable constraints placed on you. We love that! Constraints force us to build an API that has predictable semantics, and which is guaranteed to work out of the box with an incredibly rich tooling ecosystem. Easier, more straightforward integrations => happier customers.
At Rye, we’re on a mission to make commerce integrations less painful. 2024's harsh truth: Dev API startups without GraphQL are building on quicksand. Discover why we've chosen GraphQL over REST, and why it's a core part of our technical strategy. Our Head of Engineering Sophia Willows is dropping the mic on our industry standard.

🎉 Today, I'm super excited to introduce a project that's dear to me: httpscout.io. httpscout.io is a website uptime and TLS certificate expiry monitor ready for its early Beta debut. 👁️🗨️ httpscout.io is a reliable, low-cost option for early-stage technology companies. As a consultant, I have worked with clients who didn't have essential monitoring due to the cost and complexity of setting up services like AWS or Datadog. httpscout.io is also a great backup option if Datadog or NewRelic are down. 🎒 I've worked on httpscout for the last few months, and even though several things need further development, I wanted to launch the project anyway and start collecting feedback. 🔭 I'm looking forward to learning how the system behaves in production, experimenting with new ideas, finalizing pricing, testing the site in real-world usage, and evaluating the effectiveness of my monitoring (Prometheus/Grafana/Ahoy) setup. 🛤 As an aside, working with Rails is fun, and thanks to a handful of gems, launching a SaaS is much easier than it has been in years. Rails' awesomeness deserves its own post. 💻 For those interested in the technology, httpscout.io is built using Ruby 3, Rails 7, Bootstrap 5, Sidekiq 6, and PostgreSQL 15-- httpscout.io is hosted in Canada, outside the three major infrastructure providers. 🤟 I love building SaaS, and working on httpscout.io has been a dream come true. While I'm working on the app, I'm also available for Rails development, product launch support, or scaling PostgreSQL databases. 🙏 Lastly, I couldn't have reached this point without the support of friends and family. Your encouragement has meant everything. Thank you. 🌍 If you're still reading this, I'd appreciate it if you could click through to httpscout.io and help me load test the app. Once again, thank you! #saas #startup #rubyonrails #programming #monitoring #toronto #microsaas

I'm a massive proponent of choosing boring technology[1], which mostly means being very intentional about when you add new tech and defaulting to using existing tech. Over the last four years, we've added two new pieces of technology to our core stack at KOHO, and both have been enormous wins. DynamoDB[2] is an incredibly powerful database that provides single-digit millisecond response times at any scale, with zero maintenance and low cost. It's almost too good to be true—if you are on AWS and aren't using Dynamo, you should be. Here's a talk to learn more[3]. Temporal[4] is the most powerful tool I've found for building reliable distributed systems. The developer ergonomics are incredible, the team is super strong, and they have a ton of momentum. Give these tools a look, and I'd love to hear if you've had similar experiences with other tools! Confession: I love farmer’s markets, but I hate waking up early enough to actually enjoy them. That’s probably why this recent Mesmerize project is living rent-free in my mind. We’re building a full-stack e-commerce platform for Lone Star Harvest, a Texas co-op that’s turning the magic of local, fresh food into something anyone can access—anytime, anywhere. It’s been incredible bringing this to life. From the first brainstorms to seeing the pieces come together, this project is everything I love about what we do: solving real-world problems with smart, seamless design. Here’s what we’re cooking up: 🍅 Online ordering so your farmer’s market is always open. 🚛 Scheduling tools to make pickups and deliveries a breeze. 💻 And it’s built with the tech my team geeks out over: React, Next.js, Node.js, PostgreSQL, AWS, and Stripe. This isn’t just about convenience—it’s about building connections between farmers and families, and strengthening communities. And that’s why this project means so much to me. Stay tuned for the launch—I can’t wait to share it with you! #LocalFoodMovement #TechForGood #EcommerceDevelopment #MesmerizeSoftwareStudio

In the ever-evolving world of tech, we're witnessing a fascinating trend: the pendulum swing back to seemingly "older" technologies. But this isn't about regression—it's about maturity and nuanced decision-making. 🔄 What we're seeing: • Monoliths making a comeback after the microservices boom • MySQL and PostgreSQL regaining ground from NoSQL databases • Server-side rendering resurfacing alongside SPAs • On-premise solutions coexisting with cloud-native approaches 🤔 Why is this happening? It's not that one approach is inherently superior. Rather, companies are realizing that context is king. They're moving away from following trends blindly and instead choosing architectures and technologies that best fit their specific needs. 🧠 Key takeaways: 1. There's rarely a one-size-fits-all solution in tech 2. Understanding trade-offs is crucial for making informed decisions 3. Best practices evolve—stay curious and keep learning 💡 Examples of nuanced thinking: • Shopify's journey back to a monolith for performance reasons • GitHub's use of MySQL at scale, proving SQL databases can handle big data • Airbnb's hybrid approach to server-side rendering and client-side React The lesson? Don't just follow trends. Understand the principles behind different approaches, study their challenges, and choose what works best for your specific use case. #TechTrends #SoftwareArchitecture #EngineeringBestPractices
