I'm an ardent believer in the merits of emergent gameplay and proponent of giving users agency to mix and match mechanics as they see fit to better bring the play into being a player. A kid with a fist full of action figures isn't going to follow the script of a property to just reenact the screenplay. If Boba Fett wants to partner up with a Fisher-Price Spaceperson to save some plushies from a lava floor in their green Duplo and neon yellow Technic Lego craft, more power to them cause there lies joy, with new kit bashed and emergent adventures ahead in the next afternoon play session. Sure, emergent chaos can easily lead to crippled frame rates, progression exploits, and abandoned narrative intentions. This requires sensible developers to ensure underlying safety nets to catch players who's triple gainer mortar jump might've sent them hurtling out of the proverbial big top, and sturdy guardrails against grifters and grievous harm to or from others. Admittedly, this isn't the intent of all games. Some products are essentially "play the movie", and that's fine. As a developer and player who'll promptly try to turn the car around to drive the wrong way in every racing game ever, I'm less interested in treading along some flavor of interactive teleplay as I am engaging with and / or empowering an ever expanding tool kit with freely given license to delve and dish however deliriously I or players deign to do.
