The pronouncement by NNPCL left a lot to be desired from. It appears we forgotten the primary responsibilities of goverment. For the record, the purpose of government is the welfare of the citizens, section 14 1999 Constitution as amended. When a government becomes destructive of the ends for which it was instituted,it becomes the right of the people,indeed the duty of the people,to ask questions. Without the freedom to protest, democracy becomes a hollow ritual. There is no justification,for instance,for senators in Nigeria,to live like kings and queens in an economy sustained by borrowing while the masses live in anguish. In the United States, senators rent their apartment with their money but in Nigeria,with a voodoo economy,senators have everything available to a Mediterranean oil sheikh and yet,the said senate is a rubber stamp,a mere parastatal of government. As lawyers we need to speak up.

The Senate has passed the 26th Constitutional Amendment Bill, 2024, which has set January 1, 2028, as the deadline for the abolition of Riba in Pakistan. The house introduced the deadline with these words when responding to Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl a Regional Political Party led by Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman that dared challenge the government while presenting the bill. Amending clause (f) of Article 38 of the Constitution concerning the promotion of social and economic welfare, now focuses on completing "the elimination of Riba as far as practicable, by January 1, 2028. This marks a very important turn for Pakistan's financial and economic landscape under the country's efforts towards an interest-free banking system. The amendment also communicates an aspect of enhanced power exercised by religious political parties over the formulation of economic reforms. I often share in my workshops that: **What you or others are reconciling is location based and directly linked to the impact of colonisation** To understand the "gaps" and allow more "opportunities" to be realised, we must learn the truth of the impact of colonisation (location based). No more turning a blind eye or tip toeing around truth. Commit to learning it. #Reconciliation has many layers including Reconciliation in your profession or sector. As an example, in the Pilbara from the 1860s until the 1940s, Aboriginal people worked as slaves in the pastoral industry. Paid in rations. Wages were stolen from our old people once they started to get payment. This theft (by Government) is only starting to be addressed now (Stolen Wages Claims).

If a nation is to prosper, it must never be run by money hungry people. In PNG, we see people with no appropriate educational qualifications or work experiences are engaged by politicians to develop district and provincial five year rolling development plans. This is just an example but there are many cases out there. When you put in rubbish, you get rubbish in return. How will PNG be free of foreign debts plus prosper if unqualified and money hungry people are holding key positions or providing advice to pollies, beaucrats, etc ?

Some provinces are legally required to publish the exact #salary figures of its public sector employees. The #sunshinelist in Ontario often gets the most headlines. No such requirement currently exists in #Nunavut. So, I decided to dig for myself. I filed an access to information request (known to some as a freedom of information request, or #foi) with the Government of Nunavut (GN) to find out the exact salary figures of its employees. A clause in the #privacylegislation in Nunavut deems that an unreasonable invasion of privacy, but another clause permits the disclosure of a "salary range". I managed to get the information over the last five years of all GN employees who made at least $100,000 in base salary.
