Year end posts are cliched but this continues to be a celebration of people who have allowed a winning year as there have been more peaks than troughs both financially and emotionally. Recognition of the troughs previously & their impact. Ghosting is still an issue and I am trying to manage my LI feed so not immune either. Too long for 1 post so in 2 parts & recognition from last year of those laying the foundations.   Richard Moorhead Graeme J. last year I knew the power of media for good but even I didn't expect this. Next stop NDAs & Rob Campbell can also provide insight into their harm in Adland but also without their being abolished the #timeto will not work.    Thanks to Chris Dunne & Rupen Shah for furthering my knowledge on media & also Conscious Advertising Network for e.g. responsible marketing which also shows Marcomms for good (cc Kathryn Jacob OBE & Supriya Dev-Purkaystha (She/Her)). During this year I have met some amazing people supporting this from @graeme Johnston, Simon Goldberg & Angélique Parisot-Potter & especially Lee Castleton(played by Will Mellor on ITV & a sadly superior knowledge of suspense accounts). Equally the brilliant event hosted by Gideon Spanier & meeting a hero in Ian Hislop. Thanks Gideon also for your kind words at the MEFA awards.     Speaking of Media For All [MEFA], thanks for the continued great work especially building stronger relationships with so many but particularly ✨Nafissa Norris (née Jeetoo), Vanessa Vidad,Kunal Patel, Shez Iqbal & Adrian Williams.   Diversity & representation matters & thanks Nishma Patel Robb 🪩⚡️ & Collette Philip for talks & People Like Us for pushing on the ethnicity pay gap. Shelina Janmohamed, Asad Dhunna, Sangeeta Pillai (Soul Sutras) on the deteriorating rights particularly of marginalized communities    The CFO has some good articles, but we know funding for women & different ethnicities are limited. See article below... but thankfully there are great groups levelling the field.   https://lnkd.in/eax6J4Yv   Diversity, sustainability & power of brand are important to both marketers & finance. Unfortunately the riot fear (keep up the work Giles Crown & Catherine Russell on the online safety act) meant the roundtable with Toby Horry, Jennifer Shaw-Sweet, & Emmalene Maxwell didn't happen. Insights you have given persuaded me to do it at SXSW. Yorkshire tea & Diageo have shown that in a declining market, marketing helps brand & therefore profits & share price. Yorkshire tea even asked their competition to up their game to increase the total "pie" size, Marcomms similarly needs to put aside occasional tribalism & work together for the good of the sector.   Listening to Vineta Bajaj talk about budgeting accountability impressed me & the superb alyson hagan during GENCFO Community, I think marketers need to hear it & Dominique Highfield talking about how you worked with Gareth Helm & others. Also listening to Lauren Prosser on pricing.

Whilst the first is a so-so movie and the second a beige song, the third is a great movie. I would say my 2023 is the reverse. Despite my late joining, Linkedin is the best to reconnect. In 2023. I have tried to overcome my natural reticence to go to events and it has meant meeting some amazing people. Therefore, as per Yes Man and the people I met – Thank you.   Many people are exhausted and have so much ongoing, but a prevalent theme is therefore Ghosting. My plea is help manage expectations/stress/ anxiety and respond. Nobody expects it straight away but there's usually a few seconds in a week to do this, and it will generate such goodwill.   There has been much talk about the misunderstanding of marketing. Part of the thank you list is to my guinea pigs who have listened to me talking about how as an industry we perform great work but need to market ourselves better. With changing business models, priorities and lack of political accountability (in many parties) – we can’t solve everything, but we can help the messaging.   Finance are naturally cautious on expenditure but marketing in the right way will help you achieve success throughout the product lifecycle and achieve positive brand/company recognition. This is why marketing is a great investment. The data exists & I hope to be joined by some people, (better than I), in the new year to help answer questions & showcase the data in the best light to relevant stakeholders. The thank you list (sorry if missed) Media For All [MEFA] and particularly Nikki Sehgal and Naren Patel for their work and great sponsors. NABS - being amazing Billie O'Connor for creating NOVA Community and so many of its members Shelina Janmohamed, Mike Alhadeff, Jo Wallace, Paul Rowlinson, Richard Huntington Chris Dunne Dan Harris FRSA, Kim Lawrie, Lucy Hobbs, 💥 Amy Kean 💥 Cindy Gallop,? Nicola Kemp,? Kevin Chesters, Jennie Child, Shelley Dobson for championing inclusivity, wellness and doing something about it. Richard Moorhead, Giles Crown, Graeme J. for your work on legal ethics. Many from my AMV days but especially recent calls/meetings with with Cilla Snowball, Deborah T., Jennifer Shaw-Sweet, Toby Horry Jennifer Challenger, Philippa Norridge, Nick Leatham. I am still in thought mode. Karla Smith, Jessica Leyland, Clare Vosper Mortimer Vanella Jackson- for being great cheerleaders (Denise and Swana seem to have muted themselves) So many from my Discovery days Dave Buller and David Blacher for some technical assistance - I'll be coming for more on the article. There are so many others to thank as well from Grifco, Digital Spring and Design Bridge, AKQA etc Last but not least the school crew - whether Moss Hall, Aber, Kansas but mainly the Henrietta Barnett ones. The smartest people really are the kindest ones.   To the great article writers - thank you for the insight & holding people to account. Cheers to a happy and healthy 2024. We know good health is the best form of wealth.

Also a special shout to Richard Bon for being a great ally on everything from diversity to neurodiversity and being in the room to educate himself. Other leaders please take note.

One thing I did forget to say was that while the lawyers have had significant cross examination during the PO Scandal, the accountants have had kid gloves. The proposed tougher audit laws need to happen if we are to have fewer victims and tax payer bailouts. As all of us in senior finance know, this will make our working life more difficult but it has to happen.
