How to solve genotype crossing problems The Punnett square is a square diagram that is used to predict the genotypes of a particular cross or breeding experiment. It is named after Reginald C. Punnett, who devised the approach in 1905. The diagram is used by biologists to determine the probability of an offspring having a particular genotype. Breeding value, Genetic value and Dominance deviation explained The breeding value is the deviation of the progeny generated by a given progenitor from the average of a reference population. Breeding value depends on the average performance of the reference population as well as on the value of the alleles that each progenitor can transfer to its progeny. Genetic value is the effect the genes of the animal have on its production. Breeding value has the same meaning except that it is more likely to be used to describe the effects of genes the animal can pass on to its progeny. The dominance deviation of a genotype represents the difference between the value of the whole genotype and the sum of the values of its genic parts. As such, the dominance deviation is statistically an interaction effect, resulting from the interaction of alleles at the same locus.
