We can see a shift from a 50 year funded mindset, to the reawakening that trees work for the farm business, and going forward their strategical targeted positioning, increase, will be vital to us in this climate, nature crisis - in mitigating flood, drought, unseasonal weather, whilst improving freshwater quality - its biodiversity, and helping wildlife connectivity at a landscape scale with new habitat. "Agroforestry gains momentum and is now recognised in the Sustainable Farming Incentive Abi advises working with the The Woodland Trust and foresters to see whether #agroforestry can be successfully and profitably integrated into the farming business. Certainly, there is growing evidence to show that a symbiotic approach to agriculture and land use will be the way ahead for many enterprises, with benefits not only for the environment but the bottom line too." https://lnkd.in/eyu-br8z Niels Corfield Helen Chesshire Jerry Langford Adam Cormack Darren Moorcroft (he/him)

Are you interested in converting your farmland to a high-yield powerhouse that continues to perform year-over-year? One farmer in South Africa is breathing new life into degraded soils based on Ray Archuleta and Buz Kloot's pioneering regenerative farming principles. Some benefits of regenerative farming include: - Restoring Soil Health: Improved veld management reduces runoff, increases biodiversity, and enhances productivity. - Climate Adaptation: Techniques like carbon sequestration and better water cycles combat climate change impacts. - Sustainable Practices: Boosts yields and long-term resilience. Check out the full article for more insights in Farmers Weekly. #regenerativefarming #regenerativeag #agriculture #sustainablefarming https://lnkd.in/gqcm8KNP

Ask a farmer! There are the immediate reasons that farmers choose sustainable practices on their farms and they there are those sessions in life when disaster hits and you identify and can quantify additional benefits for the immediate and long term! Regenerative and sustainable agriculture practices are not the same for all farmers, they are as diverse as the geography, climate, crops, and more. They matter. The vertical farming industry is in an (understandable) rush to develop technology to the point that global food security is no longer an issue. Many of us envision networks of localized farms that are productive enough to provide surrounding populations with a wide array of produce in large enough amounts that the concepts of hunger and malnutrition fade into the past. This is a noble goal. However, agriculture isn’t just a means of feeding ourselves. Throughout human history, it has become deeply intertwined with the cultures and social structures we’ve built on almost every part of the planet. For many communities, relegating agriculture to a robotized, sterile, production-focused model could tear apart the foundation on which they have built models for family life and tradition. A new concept in agricultural studies addresses this phenomenon. The concept of “food sovereignty” is defined as: “The right of peoples to healthy and culturally appropriate food produced through ecologically sound and sustainable methods, and their right to define their food and agriculture systems.” This article discusses the plight of the Indigenous people of Batanes, who are confronting climate change while attempting to retain their agricultural traditions. According to one member of the community, “Farming should never be [abandoned] as an occupation for us Ivatans, because our lives as Indigenous peoples are anchored to our land. Our land is our life, and our resiliency and survival depend on it”. As people on the “cutting edge” of agricultural technology, we may have excellent intentions, but this article will convince you to widen the scope of your understanding of farming itself. As vertical farming enthusiasts with eyes on the future, it's important to consider that farming means far more to much of the world than simply growing produce as quickly and efficiently as possible. #VerticalFarming #FoodSovereignty #SustainableAgriculture

In my latest post I explore the impacts of industrial agriculture on the environment. Researching this topic has been disconcerting. In an effort to increase yields and reduce costs, these farming practices gradually erode soil health, strain water resources, and displace native wildlife. I share what these hidden impacts mean for all of us, and why exposing them matters. #IndustrialAgriculture #EcologicalCosts #SoilHealth #WaterQuality #BiodiversityLoss #SustainableAgriculture #FoodSystems #AnimalWelfare #Pollinators #ClimateImpacts https://lnkd.in/gtUjRRT5

Almost half (44%) of the world's habitable land is used for agriculture- an area around 5 times the size of the United States. The shift to improved productivity of land use is now critical as the planet faces biodiversity loss. Whether using more efficient grazing lands or increasing crop yields through sustainable agriculture solutions, we can continue to produce more food, using less land, and at less cost to the environment. #Agriculture #SustainableAgriculture #Biodiversity
