OpenAI has been busy upgrading its AI-powered ChatGPT, and one of its most interesting new features is the ability to remember you. Yes, ChatGPT can now retain information about your preferences, discussions, and how you’d like it to respond in future interactions — essentially learning from your conversations to make them more personalized and helpful. So, what does this mean for you?

I learnt something today 💡 Despite working with the paid version of ChatGPT for over 12 months, I was using “Temporary Chat” to enhance security when I did not want my chats to be used to train or improve OpenAI’s models.   Today, a colleague told me that the paid version of ChatGPT doesn't train on your data—if you adjust one critical default setting. Quick Tip: If you are using the paid version, manually turn off data collection for training in your account settings. ·     Go to settings. ·     Find the “Data Controls” section. ·     Turn off “improve the model for everyone”.   If you are using the unpaid version use “Temporary Chat” for heightened security.   Well there you go! OpenAI updated its blog post about ChatGPT’s memory function: “Memory is now available to all ChatGPT Plus users except those in Europe or Korea.” (They didn’t say why they’ve excluded the EU and Korea.) If you’ve ever spent time doing a long, complex task with ChatGPT, you know that there is a limit to what ChatGPT can recall inside of a context window. I wrote about this in February when the feature was first announced (see ChatGPT Remembers). Now, ChatGPT will remember. For example, if you mention your daughter Alexis who likes pink butterflies, ChatGPT can later generate a birthday card for Alexis with those details. You can store information in Memory two different ways: either by directly telling ChatGPT to remember certain facts (like coding language preferences) or having ChatGPT automatically pick up and remember relevant details from natural conversations. What’s nice is that the memorized information is persistent across conversations, and users have control over what is remembered and can view, edit, delete, and even turn off Memory. ChatGPT is designed to not store sensitive information without explicit consent. Memory allows ChatGPT to act more like a digital assistant than a task-oriented chatbot. Potential uses include remembering formatting preferences, professional/personal context for better answers, and improved recommendations (like what books you’ve previously read). For enterprise customers, shared team memories could store preferences like company document styles. Depending on your personal preferences, this feature may sit closer to “creepy” on the cool/creepy scale. This is the longest ChatGPT prompt I've ever written. In it, I explained some problems related to a project we are working on, found a solution for them, and discussed ideas until that solution turned into another revenue-generating business. ChatGPT also provided some great solutions for that. Don’t think of ChatGPT as just an AI tool; chat with it as if it were your friend. That way, you can get better advice. 💯 However, avoid sharing very sensitive or private information with ChatGPT. Forget repeating the same details — ChatGPT remembers so you don’t have to! I recently came across ChatGPT’s memory feature, and I’ve got to say—it’s been a game changer for me. One of the reasons I’ve stuck with ChatGPT from the beginning is how it just keeps improving and making my life easier. I remember when I first started using it, I had to constantly remind it about the same things—whether it was my analytics background, areas of interest, or coding tool preferences. But now, with the memory feature, I love how it keeps track of these important details! Moreover I can also tell it to remember or forget specific things 🤓 I noticed it when I asked for suggestions on a certain problem, and it referenced my 8 years of experience in data analytics to suggest solutions tailored to me. That’s when I realised just how much time this feature saves—it remembers my preferences, so I don’t have to repeat myself. Plus, I have full control— to manage, delete, or turn off memory whenever I want. Like I have the memory enabled but data for training disabled 😉 Another cool addition is "temporary chats" - these aren't saved in your history, don’t use memory, and aren’t used for model training—perfect for quick, one-off conversations! Now my random queries around "Best Ice cream near station" wont be captured in my history 🤣 These features are still being rolled out to more users, so if you don’t have them yet, they’re on the way! It’s been really cool to see how ChatGPT keeps evolving—it’s one of the reasons I’ve been using it since day one. ChatGPT prompt engineering is dead: I have been using chatGPT heavily in the past months, and I have found a way to use chatGPT to make my own prompts. My thoughts on ChatGPT-4o: More inputs and ways of interaction are better. I'm stoked. A lot of the demos seemed to have AI's talking to each other, which... why? Weird demos. From a business perspective, the most promising feature, to me, would be the screen-sharing / screen-watching / always-on personal assistant ... need to read the fine print in terms of privacy assurances. From a personal perspective, I'm stoked to try the translation capabilities. My in-laws do not speak English. I only speak very broken Russian. We've gotten by with Google Translate for years, but, dare I hope, this could change our relationship (and our lives) for the better. #genai #innovation #chatgpt
