The unknown trick to finding open VC roles before they go public... Look for VC firms that are: 1. On the third year of their current fund lifecycle or 2. Are raising a new fund Most firms hire at or just before new fund launches. This means you can pre-empt open VC roles before they become public by tracking fund lifecycles. I did this to land my first full-time VC role. Understanding VC firms and how they operate can give you a leg up in VC recruiting. #venturecapital #vc #startup #hiring

VC vs. PE backed companies I had a fascinating conversation with a VP of Talent at a PE fund that got me thinking about how company stage and investment type shape recruiting strategies. It's something I've experienced firsthand, but hearing another perspective made it clearer for me. In my career, I've recruited for both scrappy startups and established PE backed firms, and I can say confidently, it feels like playing two different sports sometimes. With venture backed startups, I've found myself in whirlwind hiring sprees, looking for adaptable go-getters who can thrive in ambiguity. The processes are often fluid, and decisions can happen at lightning speed. I remember one startup where I hired a crucial team lead after just two interviews because the fit was so right. On the flip side, my experience with PE backed companies has been all about precision and proven track records. The hiring processes are typically more structured, with multiple stakeholders involved. I once spent two months on a VP of Sales search, meticulously vetting each candidate's ability to drive operational efficiencies. The investor dynamics fascinate me too. I've seen VC firms offer valuable network connections, while PE firms often roll up their sleeves and get directly involved in key hires. Change my mind: a hiring manager should read *every* CV and application they receive. We've received over 500 applications for our open Associate roles at Accion Venture Lab, and we have a great recruiter staffed to help support our process. But I have found that, as a hiring manager, being involved in the top of the funnel is essential in sourcing and identifying the best candidates for the job - and it's why I've carved out time each day over the past month to review new applicants. Here's why: 1. It helps the whole team triangulate around profiles. Instead of using resume scrapers, word searches, etc. it ensures that each applicant is viewed holistically. It brings up questions like: - What has this person's career trajectory looked like? - What have they highlighted as the *most important* parts of their work? - ...and what do they value outside of work as evidenced by their hobbies, languages, etc.? 2. It puts character behind the name. If the first time I'm learning about someone is 1-2 conversations in, it misses important context behind *why* I wanted to speak with someone in the first place. As a hiring manager, I already have a sense of what is crucial for success; do they express like-minded importance and aspiration for excellence in those same areas? 3. And, it's worth every second of my time to do so. Venture funds of our size only hire for roles every 1-2 years, so the value:time ratio of getting deeply involved is absolutely essential.
