KickStart Monday Jeff Bezos, born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1964, showed a strong interest in science from a young age. Raised by his mother Jacklyn and his adoptive father Miguel Bezos, a Cuban immigrant and engineer, Jeff excelled academically, graduating as valedictorian from high school and later earning a degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Princeton University. After college, Bezos worked for various companies, rapidly climbing the ranks. In 1994, he took a bold step by founding Amazon, originally an online bookstore. Despite initial challenges and the risk of bankruptcy, Bezos expanded Amazon into a global retail giant. Overcoming near-bankruptcy in 2002, he led the company to remarkable success, including launching Amazon Web Services and the Kindle. By 2018, Bezos was recognized as the wealthiest man in the world, with a net worth of $112 billion. Jeff Bezos's journey is a testament to the power of vision, resilience, and bold decision-making. I want to thank Amazon for hosting the "Celebrating Latinas in Hollywood" panel on Tuesday. I loved hearing these women and their stories of how they started their careers, obstacles they faced and the work that still needs to happen in the industry. It is a small world. One of the speakers on this panel was Anna R. who I met several years back through an old Assistant of mine. Relationships are important. One of the speakers brought her younger daughter and was in the audience. She said she started in the fields picking grapes and later went to Harvard Business School!! LOVED. HER. STORY. They spoke about the importance of mentors & mentorships. Being persistent, following up, not waiting for help and just doing it. Yanira Leon "Yani" from The Imagen Foundation facilitated and was really good at asking great thought-provoking questions. And of course, the mixer afterwards was fun! I tend to be shy, but everyone was so chill and easy to talk to. Yesterday, I celebrated my third Amaversary (Amazon anniversary to the uninitiated). After 1,096 day ones, I continue to learn everyday. Some lessons are harder won than others, but I take them all with me to inform not only what I do, but also who I am. I've had the opportunity to visit various sites of various types, the privilege to meet people from innumerable walks of life, and the joy to work under leaders who "Earn Trust" and also give it in abundance. This doesn't mean that things are always smooth. Tension happens when you encourage everyone from new hires to managers to "Have Backbone; Disagree and Commit," but this is a core ingredient in Amazon's success, and an ethos that has served me well in navigating an environment replete with big changes and strong opinions.
