Did you know Shopify has *at least* five different discount systems that don’t play nice together? 1. Standard Discounts 2. Compare-at Price: Watch out for double discounts when paired with standard discounts 3. Draft Orders: Use a separate checkout system, incompatible with Shopify Functions 4. Shopify Discount Functions: Highly compatible with standard discounts, but they share the same conflicts (like double discounts with Compare-at Price unless adjusted) 5. B2B Catalogs: Some brands report double discount issues like Compare-at Price 6. Shopify Scripts: Phased out in favor of Shopify Functions by 2025 QUICK TIP: For complex discounting, I recommend Shopify Functions, which offers the most flexibility and compatibility. However, be aware of a few limitations: - You’re limited to *five discounts* total per store - Large orders often hit instruction count limits, blocking some discounts - API data limits can restrict customization, sometimes requiring a custom app With Shopify Scripts being deprecated in 2025, how are you planning to handle complex discounts in the future? Ecommerce Platform Costs: Are You Paying More Than You Think? When selecting an ecommerce platform, it's easy to focus on upfront costs, but don’t overlook the hidden fees that can significantly impact your long-term profitability. Take Shopify, for example. While it's known for being user-friendly, it operates on a subscription model with transaction fees for each sale. The Basic Shopify plan charges 2% + 25p per transaction—these fees can add up fast. I wanted to share a project we've been working on: A client had issues using Bundles in Shopify because Recharge, the platform they used for subscriptions and bundles, offered two implementation options: Option 1: Fixed Bundle This option allows customers to choose products for a bundle, which they see clearly in the cart and at checkout. However, the issue is that Shopify's order management shows a fake parent product (the bundle) along with the individual items, causing inaccurate sales and discount reports. Option 2: Dynamic Bundles This option avoids the fake parent product by discounting the individual items to match the bundle price. This solves the reporting issues but isn’t ideal for customers, as Shopify shows each product separately at checkout, which can be confusing. Our Solution: We first considered using Shopify Functions since the client is on Shopify Plus. However, Shopify's bundle functionality isn’t compatible with subscriptions, so we had to find another way. We decided to use Recharge's Dynamic Bundles and inject JavaScript into the checkout to display the bundle correctly to customers on the cart, checkout, and thank you pages. This solution also required adjusting purchase emails to reflect the bundle. No performance issues with this approach. It's worth mentioning that we also considered other subscription platforms and found the same issue with all of them since the problem stems from the incompatibility of Shopify subscriptions with bundles.
