I've always been fascinated to hear which of my words "stick" in the minds of the leaders I get to speak to. Thanks to this post from Tina DeGustino at BMO U.S. where I spoke to last week, I think I've cracked the code. The messages that stick--mine, yours, and every great leader's--are "perspective-shifters." They call out a situation everyone is familiar with, and then reframe it based on it's future potential. This is what Ken Chenault meant when he paraphrased Napoleon: "The job of a leader is to paint reality and give hope." This is what Jesus of Nazareth did when he told people "You've heard it said ____. But I tell you _____." This is what YOU do when you tell... ...your Team Member: "You underperformed this quarter, but that doesn't change how much potential you have this next quarter." ...your Kids: "I know failure/rejection sucks. But I'm not letting you quit because we both know what you're capable of." ...your Organization: "This change has had challenges. But growth is happening and wins are coming." your Self: "I feel a twinge of worry. But this momentary Worry is just a layover on the way to my next Wonder, which will guide the Work that produces my next Win." The great news is ANYONE CAN DO THIS. No charisma required. You can be funny, or not. You can be forceful, or not. You can appeal to emotions, or not. You can use numbers and graphs, or not. All you have to do is: a. Clarify the Reality b. Spotlight the Potential.
Changes around us leads to growth inside of us, and BIG wins ahead of us!!! Worry, Wonder, Work and Win….. What an incredible and impactful week it has been in Chicago for Team BMO at our annual leadership conference! Thank you Ernie (Erminia) Johannson! The time spent together was intentional, fun, and focused as we spent time connecting, sharing, PLANNING ahead and Growing the good for our communities! #WeAreBuiltForMore #HowWeShowUpMatters Honored to have supported our communities through tree planting, packing art supplies, painting a mural together for a local school AND having fun with photos where every time we took one, they donated a headshot to a woman coming back into the workforce after domestic violence.
