New upgrades to satisfy environmental regulations at the City of Boise’s water treatment facilities were going to be expensive and yield little return on investment. By standardizing its technology platforms, the city was able to build an entirely new, more efficient facility for the same cost—one that removes 50% more pollutants. Learn more about how this first-of-its-kind collaboration between local, state and federal groups is providing a model for similar projects across the country. The latest trends in clean air advocacy highlight the importance of community health. Germaine Patterson of Valley Clean Air Now (VCAN) sheds light on the potential sale of U.S. Steel and its impact on climate and public health. With over 19 million tons of CO2e emissions annually and hazardous air pollutants, this sale could have devastating effects. Considering these concerns, in coalition of climate, environmental justice and consumer advocacy organizations sent a letter to the Biden administration urging them to evaluate potential mergers and acquisitions in the domestic steel industry through a health and climate lens. “Many states and cities are increasingly interested in reusing stormwater to supplement water supplies and address water quality challenges. The work of the Pacific Institute is a great step in helping us, and other water practitioners, understand stormwater’s potential contribution to water reuse on a national scale.” Dr. Sharon Nappier, National Program Leader for Water Reuse, US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Pacific Institute report conducted in partnership with 2NDNATURE, titled “Untapped Potential: An Assessment of Urban Stormwater Runoff Potential in the United States” finds US urban areas have the potential to generate 59.5 million acre-feet of stormwater annually, on average. This is equivalent to an annual average of more than 53 billion gallons per day. Today, we joined over 30 organisations in writing to the new chair of the Government's Water Commission urging them to secure a healthier future for the UK's rivers, lakes, and seas. Together, we're calling on the commission to: 🚫 Reform the water sector to stop companies from putting profits above clean, healthy water. 🎯 Set clear goals for cleaner rivers. 💰 Properly fund regulators to ensure effective monitoring and enforcement of environmental rules. 🌿 Prioritise nature-based solutions. "Defra have held their own in the budget and it is essential now, that while the commission tackles the failings of the water industry it does not stay blind to the wider challenges our water environment faces, nor does it delay action that we know must happen. This requires a focus on catchment and nature-based management so that the whole range of pressures on our rivers are considered, including from abstraction, urban run-off, transport, farming and habitat decline. "This systemic view will allow us to restore resilient, biodiverse water systems that help us to cope with increasingly common droughts and flooding in the face of climate change." - Tessa Wardley, Director of Communications and Advocacy at The Rivers Trust. Happy Earth Day! Earth Day first began in 1970, which is also the year President Nixon created the Environmental Protection Agency with the goal of pollution reduction and public health. The EPA was tasked with conducting research as well as setting and enforcing standards of air and water quality. And that is how the evolution of prefabricated chemical storage buildings began. Protecting our waterways is in our DNA. It is who we are. It is why we do what we do every day. So when we say "Happy Earth Day," it's not just lip service or a trendy bandwagon. We use it to remember the very reason of why we're here: to protect the things you value today and tomorrow. #earthday #earthday2024 #waterways #ChemicalStorageBuildings #HazmatStorageBuildings #SecondaryContainmentSump #CodeCompliance #ProtectYourMother #EPA #OSHA #1970
