California just banned sell-by dates and will be enforcing standardized language going forward. That's a huge food sustainability win. "By requiring manufacturers to use the same phrases for date labels across products, ReFED estimates that in California alone, this law will annually save 70,000 tons of food from going to waste, saving consumers $300 million.” "The changes will take effect starting on July 1, 2026, and impact all manufacturers, processors, and retailers of food for human consumption." The impact potential of small changes -- especially when they are properly informed by both data and common sense -- can't be underestimated. #food #sustainability #leadership #climateaction Kudos to ReFED for your leadership!
So does this mean in essence the entire US will adopt the same changes? As a brand, I wouldn't want to do separate production runs for California, nor to have goods I couldn't move to/from California when unexpectedly needed.
How much waste will it be when the public actually buys the food and gets it home and the food is no good? You either take it back or throw it away either way your looking at money loss, time loss, gas loss.
A good first step, but good luck convincing the public that any expiration date on a package is about quality and not about safety. The worst dates on packages were the born on dates for beer.
Awesome! Those dates are always so confusing/misleading.
Generally speaking, you can see the future from California.
