Do our students feel seen in our schools? Do we know how to see them in return? This is the question that has now been going around and around and AROUND my head for decades. As a student myself, being seen by that first teacher in Primary school and then again in secondary led to me leaning into learning. Next as a teacher, hearing how my peers talked about marginalised kids in ‘those groups’ from ‘those families’ who were ‘hard to reach’, who pinballed through the education system, leaving with less opportunities, aspirations and life chances than their classmates. Then as a school leader, having to debate ‘if school is the right place’ for children. So I became a founder. I simply wanted to ask kids how they felt about school. But to see them through the kaleidoscope that is their lives experience. Give them a voice. But also make it super simple for school leaders to actively listen and act in return. A year after launching our student module with the GEC Platform, we are delving into the data. 📊 Here are our first bitesize results from asking over 10,000 students do you feel seen. It’s my first - but definitely not last! - time sharing so please have a read. I’ll be exploring this for my thesis and sharing results over the very near future. Given the post-pandemic financial and organizational strains confronting many school districts, how should they address the chronic-absenteeism crisis? In the current issue of Kappan, I argue for combining highly local data on attendance barriers with brisk continuous-improvement processes focused on the aligned interventions that are also evidence-based, comparatively low-cost, and scalable. When are going to start getting it? Go to the source of the problem. Sources in fact. Why aren't they attending? Getting them to school won't solve much at all. What do you do with them once they are there? Do they even need to be there at all to learn? What does attendance even mean? It's about engagement. An education system that's fit for purpose. A society that cares about and supports individuals. That fosters community and connection. A government that wags a finger and waves a big stick won't change a thing. How do we tackle the issue of attendance in schools? As we navigate through the challenges of education, one issue that continues to be an area of concern is attendance in schools. Especially in the wake of Covid. Ensuring regular attendance plays a vital role in a child's academic success and overall development. However, recent trends have shown fluctuations in attendance rates, which are having a huge impact on students learning and engagement. It is great to see that the Department of Education has implemented various strategies aimed at improving attendance across schools. These initiatives include a combination of policy adjustments, targeted interventions, and collaboration with teachers, parents, and communities. I feel its important that we push this conversation to the forefront and share insights on how we can enhance attendance practices in our schools. We know that the school closures have affected a generation, but this lack of direction from the government in response to the senate inquiry on school refusal will leave many parents without much hope.
