What Have Project Managers Ever Done for Us? Scene: A group of project team, engineers and sponsor gather in a meeting room, complaining about the seemingly useless role of project managers in their organization. Employee 1: (sarcastically) So, what have project managers ever done for us? Employee 2: Well, they've given us a clear project scope and objectives. Employee 1: Oh, yeah, yeah. They did give us that. That's true. Employee 3: And they've created a detailed project plan with timelines and milestones. Employee 1: Okay, I'll grant you that the project scope and the project plan are two things that project managers have done. Employee 4: And don't forget about resource allocation! They ensure we have the right people and tools to get the job done. Employee 1: (reluctantly) Right. Resource allocation. I didn't think of that. Employee 5: Project managers also facilitate communication among team members and stakeholders. Employee 1: All right, fine. I'll give you that one too. Employee 6: Risk management! Project managers identify and mitigate potential risks to keep the project on track. Employee 1: (sighs) Okay, you've got a point there. Employee 7: And let's not forget about budget management. They keep us from overspending and ensure we deliver within financial constraints. Employee 1: Budget management, yes. That's definitely something they do. Employee 8: Quality control! Project managers monitor and ensure the quality of our deliverables. Employee 1: (throwing hands up in defeat) All right, all right! I suppose project managers have done quite a bit for us after all. Employee 2: (smirking) So, apart from clear project scope, detailed project plans, resource allocation, communication facilitation, risk management, budget management, and quality control, what have project managers ever done for us? Employee 1: (pauses, then admits) Brought peace? (The room erupts in laughter) In conclusion, while it may be easy to overlook the contributions of project managers, they play a vital role in keeping projects on track, ensuring efficient resource utilization, managing risks, and delivering quality results. So, the next time someone asks, "What have project managers ever done for us?" you can confidently reply, "Quite a lot, actually!" PS: not all Project Managers, but I hope, you have all met at least once in your lifetime a good PM :) the original: Monty Python - What have the romans ever done for us (youtube.com)

Re-Reading on the Rails: Classics Never Get Old Yesterday's commute between Berlin and Munich I did a little ritual I like to call "back to classics." Those 3-4 hour trips are the perfect environment for revisiting familiar reads. It's cool to see these texts with new eyes, and more often than not, I find fresh connections and insights I missed before. The focus-heavy atmosphere of a train journey might not be ideal for deep dives into entirely new material. But for revisiting familiar favorites? Pure gold! This time around, I picked up "Scrum: The Art of Doing Twice the Work in Half the Time" by Jeff Sutherland. An absolute must-read for anyone in software development management! Coming back to it with my current experience was like revisiting an old friend with new stories to share. One concept in particular resonated deeply: FLOW. It's a fascinating idea that keeps popping up in different fields, and Sutherland's take on it in the context of Scrum was particularly insightful. It even reminded me of this amazing video demonstration https://t1p.de/vanph What are your favorite reads to revisit? #softwaredev #leadership #scrum #commutereads #lifehacks #flow P.S. this text has been re-formulated by Google's gemini. Although it does not sound anywhere close my TOV, I still find it very helpful especially for limited time cituations.

Red, Amber, and Green, as if it were that simple. The color coding can help, but there is much more to this than the indicators. Metrics. The things we believe may not be true; metrics help us avoid these errors or at least quickly change tack or adjust to circumstances as they are. https://lnkd.in/dJtusEYD #project #projectmanagement #RAG #RedAmberGreen #projectstatus #projectmanager #metrics #projectreporting #metrics
