TOWNHALL TWO On April 26th we host our second New Working Class Townhall meeting. The clamour of headlines since we last met in January evidence a toppling stack of issues to reflect upon: 🎩 The 'survival' stasis of our young 🎩 Declining attendance and engagement in formal learning 🎩 The efficacy and financial viability of education 🎩 The value of academic knowledge versus life skills 🎩 The changing requirements of our future workforce 🎩 Increasing costs of recruiting and retaining our staff In this context we ask three questions: a. How can we lead (and de-risk) a systemic rethink and re-engineering of how educators work with employers to deliver sustainable economic value? b. What will galvanise a coalition of stakeholders (educators, employers, and local authorities) to help prototype our Lifelong Learning pathway? c. How might we recalibrate outcomes to be of measurable commercial benefit to all? Please register via the QR code below, and feel free to bring other guests who might be interested in this conversation. The coffee will be strong. Join the movement. ✊🎩

Mobility Camp Unconference no. 7 - hosted in York’s 15th Century Guildhall on Friday 20th Sept 2024 Lesson Learned #1 Reverse Panels work as an alternative to a traditional panel! It was an absolute JOY to host our first Reverse Panel (called “All Aboard” 🤓) alongside wonderful Kit Allwinter. We threw a soft, squishy red London bus and yellow Merseyrail train out into the audience of ~70 people to anyone that wanted to jump into the conversation about our theme for the year, Positive Vibes. Ejiro Ikoko has captured some of the willing participants in these wonderful photos. 📸🚌🚈 This idea was actually a response to my growing (personal) dislike of traditional panel discussions, which tend to exclusively pre-determine who is valuable enough to have a voice in the conversation, and increasingly have dwindling or non existent question time… I've written a short guide below in case you want to give it a go! All Aboard (reverse panel): Set chairs up in a circle or a horseshoe. 1-2 facilitators kick off the conversation in the middle, posing a question to the audience - we asked questions aligned to our Positive Vibes theme, such as what are you feeling good about? What are some quick wins for transport? What gives you bad vibes that we need to bring some good vibes to? Audience members can volunteer to respond to the question by giving facilitators a wave. The squishy bus or train is thrown to a willing participant. The willing participant has up to 2 min max to respond, before throwing the bus/train onto another willing participant - ideally the same person speaks no more than three separate times… James Gleave kept an eye on time and had a bike bell ready to ring for keeping us to time. Every round of 10 mins the bus is thrown back to the facilitators to summarise the discussion and pose a further question, based on the discussion. Reach out to any of this years organisers and volunteers to hear more about how this went - Amber Kenyon Omar Ajaz Chinebuli Uzondu Catriona Swanson Alistair Aitken Stephen Lynn.

T-Shaping event Last Thursday, my colleagues and I had the chance to participate in a set of fun workshops on T-Shaping. Thank you to our organizers for this great event which also helped to strengthen our team spirit. What is T-Shaping? The concept of "T-Shaping" is used in the field of talent management and professional development, including in the field of IT. It refers to a skills model where an individual has both specialized expertise in a specific field (represented by the horizontal bar of the "T") and general knowledge or interdisciplinary skills in various related fields (represented by the stem vertical of the "T"). In IT, this means that a professional has in-depth expertise in a particular area, such as software development, database administration, data analysis, etc. (represented by the horizontal bar of the "T"), but is also able to understand and collaborate effectively with experts in other fields, such as design, marketing, project management, etc. (represented by the vertical stem of the "T"). Having a “T” skill set is valuable because it allows a person to be both a competent specialist in their field and an effective contributor to multidisciplinary projects. This promotes collaboration, problem solving and innovation in a professional environment.

ALL WORK NO PLAY: A WEEK IN THE LIFE OF AN EDUCATOR Monday mornings are always hectic, but this week started with an extra dose of chaos. I had a full day of back-to-back whirlwind of activities, encapsulating the essence of the saying, "All work, no play." As an educator, I found myself fully immersed in preparing for the upcoming school graduation. From organizing events to ensuring every detail was perfect. My to-do list seemed endless, with tasks ranging from: arranging for guest speakers, and ensuring the students' achievements were properly celebrated. Each day brought new challenges and triumphs. These notable events punctuated the hectic week: - Dress Rehearsal - Coordinating with the venue, - Awards Finalization - Preparations for guest speaker Amidst the busyness, I learned something new about virtual event management. Given the hybrid nature of the graduation, combining in-person and virtual elements was a novel challenge. Navigating the technical aspects and ensuring a seamless experience for all attendees was an enriching experience. This week was a powerful reminder of the impact educators have on their students' lives and the importance of celebrating their achievements. The joy and pride of seeing students reach this milestone make every moment of hard work worthwhile. I'd love to hear about your busy week experiences! What was the highlight of your day? #tgif. #highlight. #schoolgraduation. #betechified. #betechifiedbootcamp
