Last Friday was my last day as a Lead Research Scientist at Robert Bosch Research & Technology Center at North America after 3 years. I’d like to pay my gratitude to Prof. Ken Goldberg at UC Berkeley for being such a fantastic and supportive collaborator with Bosch; to Kaiyuan Chen at UC Berkeley for phenomenon contribution in FogROS2 for Cloud Robotics; and to Liu Ren and Marcellino Gemelli for all the guidance and support during my time at Bosch. Wondering what’s coming? See my next post. 😉 #bosch #UC Berkeley #FogROS

We're thrilled to announce that Rebecca Kramer-Bottiglio is this year's recipient of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Alan T. Waterman Award. This marks a remarkable achievement as she becomes the first Yale engineer to be honored with the nation's highest accolade for an early-career scientist or engineer. Kramer-Bottiglio's transformative work in robotics challenges the traditional boundaries of the field by developing robots with the capacity to adapt and evolve in real-time to their surroundings, drawing inspiration from the resilience and versatility of biological life. With the $1 million award to advance her research, Kramer-Bottiglio is set to deepen the integration of multifunctional materials into robotics, potentially revolutionizing the future capabilities of robots. https://loom.ly/n_OIZI8 #YaleEngineering #WatermanAward #NSF # #Innovation #Robotics #RoboticsforHumanity #MechanicalEngineering #MaterialsScience #Yale #YaleUniversity #Engineering

Visiting UC Irvine was very fun and inspiring. I spoke about our recent research in Bridging the Gap between Discrete Agent Strategies in Game Theory and Continuous Motion Planning in Dynamic Environments https://lnkd.in/e6TuXtnB I really enjoyed our discussions Alfred Chen, Joshua Garcia, Habiba Farrukh, Tony Givargis and it was wonderful to catch up with Mohammad Al Faruque, Yasser Shoukry, Nalini Venkatasubramanian and Nik Dutt. https://lnkd.in/ePKKZHVm Generating competitive strategies and performing continuous motion planning simultaneously in an adversarial setting is a challenging problem. In addition, understanding the intent of other agents is crucial to deploying autonomous systems in adversarial multi-agent environments. Existing approaches either discretize agent action by grouping similar control inputs, sacrificing performance in motion planning, or plan in uninterpretable latent spaces, producing hard-to-understand agent behaviors. This paper proposes an agent strategy representation via Policy Characteristic Space that maps the agent policies to a pre-specified low-dimensional space. Policy Characteristic Space enables the discretization of agent policy switchings while preserving continuity in control. Also, it provides intepretability of agent policies and clear intentions of policy switchings. Then, regret-based game-theoretic approaches can be applied in the Policy Characteristic Space to obtain high performance in adversarial environments. Our proposed method is assessed by conducting experiments in an autonomous racing scenario using scaled vehicles. Statistical evidence shows that our method significantly improves the win rate of ego agent and the method also generalizes well to unseen environments. After a four-year hiatus, an interdisciplinary team at Arizona State University has revived the Southwest Robotics Symposium, bringing back an event that was once a mainstay for academics and industry professionals. More than 600 people registered for the conference that took place earlier this month on ASU’s Tempe campus. Hamid Marvi, an associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering in the School for Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy, part of #ASUEngineering, served as the event’s co-general chair. “Over the course of two days, we featured an exceptional lineup of invited talks, faculty presentations, student lightning talks, poster sessions and robot demonstrations,” Marvi says. “This event highlighted ASU’s leadership in robotics research and fostered meaningful connections with leaders in the field.” Nakul Gopalan, an assistant professor of computer science in the School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence and fellow co-general chair of the symposium says it’s crucial to foster a sense of community. “Events like these are important for researchers because they create opportunities to explore collaborations that can lead to real advancements,” Gopalan says.

TUM students interested in ethics and robotics, this the lecture for you!
"What we don't understand, we explain to each other" I welcome all Technische Universität München students to the new summer semester 2024. We from the TUM Autonomous Vehicle Systems Lab are kicking off the new semester with a new lecture called "Ethical Robot Systems - Teaching Robots Right from Wrong". The goal is to provide our students with a deep insight into the fundamental contexts of machine ethics, with particular application to robotic systems. As you embark on this new academic journey, I encourage you to approach each day with curiosity, passion, and a willingness to learn. Whether you are returning to campus or joining us for the first time, your studies at Technische Universität München offer you a wealth of opportunities for growth and exploration, both inside and outside the classroom. As we navigate this ever-changing landscape, we must support one another and stay connected as a community. Together with my team members Korbinian Moller, Felix Jahncke, Marc K., Alexander Langmann, Baha Zarrouki, Frederik Werner, Rainer Trauth, Roberto Brusnicki, Yuchen Zhang we can make this semester together with you as a student a success and create a brighter future for ourselves and those around us.

This little video clip isn't anything special, its the background music that has a little extra to it. I created this audio with the help of AI tools. While not perfect or overly impressive in composition, the fact that you can provide a detailed text prompt and get a song back is awesome! #ai #artificialintelligence #aitools
