Slide L from my A-Z of the key events taken place in UK & Ireland’s Construction Industry Mar/14-24: Labour - no surprises with this entry as this has remained hot topic even before the 10yr review and expect it to continue moving forwards. I take a look at some of the ways the skills gap is being addressed Lakesmere - revisiting the failure of a leading envelope contractor at the time, within the Industry. It's very easy to forget the scale of operations for specialists as reports at the time read "affairs, business & assets of the Grp companies, which have around 900 employees, are now being managed by the joint administrators". One of Lakesmere's subsidiaries McMullen Facades lives on under JRL Grp today. But fellow façade specialist Kaicer - whose activities came from novating Lakesmere's legacy portfolio - would also struggle & unfortunately fail in Q1'22 Lower Thames Crossing - looking into the details of what will be UK's longest road tunnel once completed If you want to discuss any part of the A-Z report being released - please reach out to me. There's close, famously close and then there is notoriously close I have had a hard time coming to grips with the term "famously close". I can understand Tay Tay and Kelce being described as "Famously close", but that term does not sit so well when describing the relationship between Master Builders Victoria and the CFMEU. But one really needs to appreciate the extent of the closeness between the third partner in the Ménage à trois, the Victorian Government, to really appreciate the extent of how badly the industry has been let down. The Building Industry Advisory Council (BICC) is supposed to be a 'trusted advisory group' for the Victorian building and construction sector. It consists of multiple industry players including Multiplex, Lendlease, Master Builders and the CFMEU. It also includes WorkSafe Victoria. It is chaired by former Master Builders CEO, Rebecca Casson. The BICC provides an avenue for the Victorian Government to seek advice on significant industry issues and to advise the Government "on matters of interest and concern". It is supposed to drive a strong, profitable, and harmonious building and construction industry. So what the hell have they been doing for the last five years? The statement 'everyone knew' has been used so widely in the last few weeks and yet you had major players sitting at the table holding hands and clearly spending way too much time on diversity and inclusion that they clearly were oblivious to the rampant abuses of safety that were happening on construction sites across Melbourne. So much for 'excellence in safety, health, culture, and wellbeing' being a strategic priority. The charter of the BICC is, through consultation on key issues, to "foster a harmonious working environment in the Victorian building industry" and to "promote cultural change in the industry, through examination of initiatives that will improve Victoria’s construction productivity, reduce industrial disputation, enhance occupational health and safety, encourage skills development, and enhance employment security". Tell it to the site managers that have been humiliated and abused. Tell it to the subcontractors that have been ripped off and replaced by bikie affiliated contractors. Tell it to the builders that were intimidated and cooerced to the extent of exhaustion that they felt they had no other choice than to fly the white flag and surrender control of their sites to the CFMEU. Famously close to the CFMEU, notoriously close the the Andrews-Allan Government. https://lnkd.in/g8ys-UtP

🛤 Three bidders chase £1.4bn Midlands rail hub alliance 🛤 Three consortia are bidding for a #majoralliance deal to upgrade a series of #raillines and #stations around #Birmingham and nearby #towns and #cities. Acting as client, Network Rail is seeking a main alliance partner to deliver over £1bn of #nonsignalling and around £350m of #signalling works. The vast alliance has attracted a strong line-up of bidders with Balfour Beatty plc forming a #jointventure with Skanska. #Bam has teamed up with Amey to form the other bidding JV while Laing O'Rourke, #Volker and Atkins make up the third bid consortium. A fourth team that was also chasing the alliance deal involved Dragados SA / Babcock International Group / Keltbray / AECOM but is believed to have dropped out of the running. The #MidlandsRailHub programme will involve a major programme of works across the West, Central and East #Midlands. To deliver the programme #NetworkRail aims to create an Alliance set to run for eight years, first concentrating on works around Birmingham Moor Street. The scope of works is currently divided into eight interventions across the three sections: The most advanced in development is the West & Central Midlands programmes at Snow Hill, King’s Norton to Barnt Green and Birmingham Bordesley to Moor Street Works within scope include the design and build of: new platforms and sidings; up to two new chords into Birmingham Moor Street; widening of existing viaduct; power supply upgrades; new freight loops; new overhead line equipment and various signalling works including the re-modelling of existing layouts. The other two programmes have still to be finalised and are subject to funding decisions and design development: West & Central interventions at Worcester to Hereford and Stoke Works Junction East Midlands interventions at Water Orton and Nuneaton to Wigston. The programme of works will be delivered under a NEC4-style Alliance Contract. Image: Birmingham Moor Street plan design by architect Grimshaw https://lnkd.in/eH264Z35
