🌍 **Redefining Global Mobility: Expanding the Meaning of 'Expat'**
When people hear "global mobility," they often think of either expatriates or transportation. But what exactly defines an expatriate?
The term "expat" is short for expatriate, originating from the Latin "ex" (out of, away) and "patria" (one’s native land). It precisely describes anyone living outside their country of origin.
Historically, the term "expatriate" was used during colonial times to describe individuals sent abroad by Colonial Britain. Over time, businesses adopted this term for Western employees on temporary assignments abroad.
However, times have changed. With increased diversity in the origins of people living abroad and the variety of international moves (e.g., permanent transfers, short-term assignments, international local hires etc.), it's time to broaden the understanding of "expatriate." This term should embrace all foreigners with similar needs: integrating into a new culture, learning a new language, settling into a new job and home, and navigating bureaucratic hurdles.
At AnythingExpat, we are dedicated to this inclusive approach, reflecting the diverse, interconnected world we live in today. 🌐
