It means building cultures where diversity is genuinely valued and everyone has an equal opportunity to thrive and lead. How I Show Up! Every day is a new opportunity to show up intentionally, authentically, and purposefully. For me, showing up means stepping into every space with #confidence, #determination, and a deep #commitment to making a difference. I show up with #boldness, refusing to shrink despite the challenges or doubts. My boldness, once seen as a potential obstacle, has become my #strength—a guiding light that leads me to #advocate for change, #disrupt norms, and #inspire #inclusion. I show up with #purpose. As the founder of Black Mentorship Inc., my mission is clear: to empower Black professionals, bridge representation gaps in leadership, and inspire meaningful connections. I bring my lived experiences, #resilience, and #faith to every conversation, every event, and every decision. I show up with intention. In the Shadow of Celebration: Addressing Resistance to DEI During Black History Month 🎉➡️🚫🤝🏾👩🏿⚖️ Between reading about the backlash and recent conversations about DEI, something is weighing on my spirit. I am noticing we are choosing comfortable over transformational shifts. It prompts me to reflect on a few questions about the essence of DEI work: isn't discomfort a part of growth? Isn't the point to challenge our preconceptions and biases, to make space for voices historically sidelined? DEI isn't about comfort—it's about fairness, justice, and creating opportunities for those who've been denied them. When we prioritize comfort over change, we risk perpetuating the very exclusions we seek to eradicate. This isn't to dismiss concerns or feelings but to recognize that transformational change requires us to step into the uncomfortable. The path to building a truly inclusive culture is fraught with challenges, and resistance is a part of the journey. But it's a journey worth taking. It's time we embrace discomfort as a catalyst for growth and change, not as something to be avoided. Let's not move in the wrong direction. Instead, let's engage in open, honest conversations that pave the way for a more equitable future for everyone. I'm curious to hear your thoughts and experiences. Day 29: Things I'm doing this Black History Month...and Beyond! Embracing a radical praxis. In celebrating Black History beyond just one month, remembering the legacies left by my ancestors, and stepping into the promises there are for my life, I know fully that I am embarking upon a radical approach. One that connects the dots between my work and my values, one that underscores personhood and uplifts calling. Launching The Radical Praxis -- specialized consulting, coaching training for ambitious and devoted women of the global majority -- I'm taking this call because for us, our very existence is radical. To have have a radical praxis is to explore root causes with the intent of applying the learning for change. So, my call for us is to 💫 stand in our own power 💫 share the truth of our experiences 💫 love radically 💫 heal in community 💫 thrive! Navigating the professional world as a Black woman brings unique challenges. In workplaces, study spaces, and while running a business, the journey isn’t only about the work—it’s about holding onto our light and strength, despite others who might want to dim it. Often, people see your light, your resilience, and your excellence—and instead of celebrating it, they may see it as a threat. Comments that undermine, microaggressions that challenge, and a lack of inclusion can sometimes feel like waves designed to wear us down. 🌊 Yet, we continue. 💪🏽 For me, it’s been essential to remember why I’m here: to make an impact, to inspire, and to create spaces where we’re seen, heard, and valued. Staying positive doesn’t mean ignoring the challenges. Instead, it’s about grounding ourselves in our purpose, in the support networks we build, and in the daily affirmations that we deserve to take up space, excel, and succeed. 🌱 We are leaders, creators, and innovators. By staying connected to our vision, we rise above the negativity. We build pathways not only for ourselves but for others, showing that there is strength in our communities, our culture, and our voices. ✊🏾 To my fellow Black professionals: Keep showing up as your whole self. Navigating the world as a black man comes with its own set of challenges. From systemic racism to stereotypes, the burden can be heavy. In Corporate America, these challenges often manifest in subtle biases and barriers that affect career progression. Yet, in the face of this adversity, black men continue to excel, bringing unique perspectives and resilience to the table. It's a constant effort to break through these barriers, prove one's worth, and challenge preconceptions. The weight of representation is felt, as the pressure to succeed extends beyond personal achievement to paving the way for others. However, it's crucial to acknowledge these struggles, foster understanding, and work towards a more inclusive and equitable society. Today Feb 29, 2024, as we reflect on the significance of Black History Month, let us embrace the spirit of community work as a catalyst for empowerment and social transformation. Issa is my homegirl in my head- we are similar in our personality and passion. If you aren’t creating a pathway for your people, who will? I can’t wait for the day I am able to have my own organizations in our communities to do what she’s doing from a media level on a social perspective. The movement of giving back not only enriches the lives of those directly involved but also strengthens the fabric of society as a whole. Honoured to Meet the Inspiring Baroness Floella Benjamin! 🙌🏾 During Black History Month, I had the incredible opportunity to meet the legendary Baroness Floella Benjamin, who shared her wisdom and powerful insights on overcoming adversity. Her story of resilience deeply resonated with me as a Black professional, and I wanted to share some of her invaluable lessons with my network: ✨ The 4 C's to Live By: * Consideration: It's so important to show kindness and empathy towards others. We’re all on different journeys, and understanding this can make the world a better place. * Contentment: Having a happy and content heart allows us to help others, and I truly believe that when we find peace within ourselves, we’re more empowered to lift others. * Confidence: Floella emphasised the importance of self-love – to look in the mirror and be proud of who you are. This hit home for me, as confidence has been key in my own journey. * Courage: Having the courage to stand up for what's right is essential. Whether it's moral courage or speaking up for others, it makes a difference. At E.ON, I've been fortunate to work in an environment where growth and diversity are valued, and moments like this remind me why representation and inclusion are so critical. Baroness Benjamin’s words remind us that we are all capable of greatness, and we should never shy away from our values or our potential.
