This is the pool of writers we pull from whenever we begin work with a new client. However, our availability of new client work is not constant. We prefer to review applications on a rolling basis and reach out to folks we’re interested in working with when client work becomes available. Please note that if we’d like to work with you, we will ask to hold onto your information so that we may contact you later on. A statement from us that we want to work with you—or offering you a contract—is not a guarantee of work in any particular timeframe. Once we do staff client accounts, writers usually stay on that account for the duration of our engagement with the client. If you see any of these red flags 🚩on a 'Freelance' job listing - Don't apply! 1. "Fixed monthly rate for full-time availability" - We're freelancers, we can't dedicate full-time hours to just one client! 2. "Flexible working hours" - That should be a given, you don't employ us, we do. 3. "Social media, graphic design, technical SEO, etc." The role is for a writer, if you want this, look for a different kind of creator, or split the role up and work with different people. 4. "Competitive Pay" - Freelancers set their own rates. This is not something that makes your company look good! I feel like I've forgotten a few here. You don't see these often, but let's take a look at what I dug up for today's newsletter. hims & hers, a publicly traded telehealth company, is hiring a freelance data journalist (yes, this is more advanced than your average freelance writing position). A few points from the job description: - Primary responsibility: generating innovative story ideas, conducting in-depth analysis of numerical data, and creating attention-grabbing headlines - Workload: an expectation of two to five submissions per week - Compensation: $1,000 - $1,500/article On the low end, you'd earn $8k/month. On the top end, compensation could reach as high as $30k/month. You won't find gigs like these often, but there ARE companies willing to pay premium rates (like this) for premium work. We still underpay writers. ... This includes freelancers, journalists, copywriters, and marketers. In 2017, I was offered a full-time job as a copywriter that paid $23,000 per year. I declined the offer because that isn't remotely close to a respectful and/or livable wage for a career that requires a college degree. We creative types have a responsibility to say no to employers who don't value our skillset and don't provide adequate compensation. While not everyone has the privilege or luxury to decline job offers, we can all certainly do better for career writers, storytellers, and wordsmiths. 👇 P.S. This doesn't necessarily apply to "writers" who submit content completely written by AI for work on freelance platforms. I'm talking robot writing without human edits, touchups, or changes. There's an interesting freelance writer job posting trend I've noticed over the past 6 to 12 months. I generally see an uptick in activity toward the end of the month. I'm not sure why this is the case, but my best guess is that publishers and editors are looking to get their ducks in a row for the coming month. Now that we're in the last full week of April, I hope this trend holds true again. I'll keep you posted on my findings. I have some good news about bad clients. They're few and far between. That's right. I've been a freelance writer for 15+ years and have only run into a handful of truly bad clients. Most of them are easy to work with and do exactly what they say. Even better, some go above and beyond. Here are some personal examples: Clients that cover PayPal fees Clients that send holiday gifts :) Clients that take the time to get to know me personally Clients that pay more than the invoice to make up for a late payment Clients that offer "no questions asked" flexibility during times of emergency Don't let one bad 🍎 spoil the bunch. I came across a post where an agency owner was unable to hire an exceptional writer to handle his brand's growing content needs. It is important to understand the following aspects when you hiring a freelance writer: - Realistic timelines so that content quality is not compromised - Competitive pay according to the value and impact they bring - Do not ask them for free unpaid assignments - Understanding that human-centric content is here to stay Think from the perspective of a writer, and you will understand the situation in a better way. A discovery regarding response to freelancer's applications All content writers, copywriters, and other professionals attention! I've made an interesting discovery regarding job applications on LinkedIn. (When the tables turn, and instead of you commenting 'interested' on job applications, recruiters DM you) For the last few years, I've noticed as a freelancer applying for new job openings and finding clients every year, that we don't get noticed year round. Applying to 30-45 jobs every week, only 0 or 1 responds to a freelance remote writer's application. But I do get a lot of emails and LinkedIn DMs around 10-12 close to the financial year. (even the ones who are looking for writers year round and ignore my application without even going through it) So, start applying because this isthe peak time when recruiters are looking for applicants and new hires. Tried and tested 👍🏻 Go for it. This week in whiplash freelance life…and a message for anyone whose neck is sore from the same. ~three separate editors announcing they are taking all or most content in house (one shared that a staff writer is way cheaper). I’ve been with multiple of them for 3+ years. ~two solid content agencies reached out about ghostwriting CEO though leadership and related content marketing projects ~two of my favorite editors found themselves without work due to layoffs ~another editor messaged to share they can’t keep up with all the work they need to assign to freelancers and can I help every day now? Here’s my point: if I only dwelled on #1 and #3 above, as crappy as they are, I wouldn’t make it in freelance life. It’s a back and forth up and down roller coaster often all in one week. When I get one of those stressful emails, I take a pause to see the multiple opportunities it presents and I: ~make a dogged effort to maintain relationship with that editor, help them find a new spot if I can, and work with them again where they land too, and/or: ~connect with a new editor there, or another vertical, or someone else to be my next point of contact and/or: ~remember the whole closed door open window saying…because sometimes the new OPPs even show up the same week if you are watching carefully not sulking. But in the end, isn’t this all sort of the wild and exciting part? The “free” in freelance?
