Technical Insights: CIGRE 2024 Paris Session: How an optimized time synchronization concept boosts digital switchgear's protection system reliability and availability. The paper highlights the need for robust time synchronization in digital substations, describes the vulnerability of GNSS such as natural disturbances and spoofing, and the importance of immunity to GNSS signal interference to ensure uninterrupted operation and significantly improve the availability and reliability of the protection system. In substations, reliable time synchronization is crucial. You can achieve this by either using a central distribution of PTP signals from atomic clocks or separate time sources for different applications within the substation. This approach enhances reliability and avoids GNSS-related issues. Siemens at CIGRE 2024 | August 25-30 | ParisHow an optimized time synchronization concept boosts digital switchgear's protection system reliability and availabilityDiscover the unique capabilities of SIPROTEC 5 devices at our Siemens booth in Paris. These advanced devices, when part of a digital substation with IEC 61850-9-2 process bus, can be configured to operate independently of GNSS influences when it comes to protection functions, increasing their availability and reliability. The key to this is the ability to use specialized time synchronization sources for the various time synchronization applications to ensure robust time synchronization within a substation. For example, by using a built-in IEEE 1588v2/PTP free-running grandmaster clock in our SIPROTEC 5 devices, the synchronization of sampled values is immune to GNSS signal interference, ensuring uninterrupted operation and improved reliability of the protection system. We cordially invite you to visit our Siemens booth at CIGRE 2024 in Paris. This will be a great opportunity to gain insights into the latest product news related to SIPROTEC 5 devices. We look forward to welcoming you at our booth in Paris for an engaging and insightful exploration of the advantages of SIPROTEC 5 devices in digital substations.
