Your consumables budget may seem straightforward. But it can get complicated when you’re trying to differentiate between everyday items that qualify as consumables, and everyday items that do not. To help cut through the confusion we've broken down the different consumables categories, what you can claim under consumables and how you can purchase consumables using your plan funding. https://lnkd.in/gAj2KMhj

Be careful out there… Starting in the next 8 days, be careful of who you do business with. Pay attention and be mindful of who provides their goods and services to you. Listen carefully to the people providing your healthcare, your childcare, your professional services (this includes physicians, dentists, lawyers, accountants, daycare). Take notice of the comments from your colleagues and leadership at your employer. Don’t assume because folks take a professional oath, that it means they won’t see you as less than human, all the while taking your money. Start requiring that everyone who has an impact on your life does not hold bigoted beliefs. Do this before you schedule a medical procedure with them, buy a house from them, or allow them to defend you in court. They will take your money and pray for your downfall! Take this seriously! This extends to personal relationships too. I can’t be friends OR acquaintances with people who minimize hate.

CARERS LEAVE ACT 2023 PASSED! Final legislation passed in Parliament yesterday (28 Feb) seals a ground-breaking new right for two million employees with unpaid caring responsibilities to take up to five days of Carer’s Leave. It sets out the final working details of how employees will be able to request Carer’s Leave from their employer when the law comes into force in just over one months’ time on 6th April 2024. Further details about the new act: -The regulations for the Carer’s Leave Act 2023 make clear that employees in Great Britain with a long-term unpaid caring responsibility for a family member or friend will be able take up to five days of unpaid Carer’s Leave. -They will have the same employment protections associated with other forms of family-related leave, such as protection from dismissal as a result of having taken the leave. -The regulations set out that employees can take Carer’s Leave in full or half days, or in a whole block of five days, and must give advance notice that is twice the length of time that needs to be taken. HOW MANY CLIENTS DO YOU HAVE HIDING IN YOUR CLIENT BANKS? According to research by national charity Carers UK, by the time women reach age 46, on average half have already become carers of an older adult. The same percentage applies to men by the age of 57. How many of them are in your client bank? Are you aware of how caring responsibilities can create vulnerabilities? What actions are you taking to identify this group of clients, identify and help meet any additional needs they may have? The Financial Vulnerability Taskforce have today aligned publication of their latest good practice guide on supporting those with caring responsibilities to tie in with yesterday's announcement re The Carers Act 2023. Supervisor Problems? 'My supervisor is leaving....' Supervisors sometimes have to leave a PhD project - they may retire, leave the institution, take maternity/paternity/adoption leave.... If a supervisor moves institutions (often to a different city) then usually, you’ll have the choice to follow them to their new institution. Whether you want to or not is another question. If you decide to remain at the same place usually your second supervisor will be on hand to help and either take-over as the primary supervisor or at least help you to find another supervisor from the rest of the faculty. It will almost certainly be unsettling and a disruption. But - don’t panic. You will have the chance to benefit from additional and different expertise and feedback. It may be possible for the original supervisor to continue supervising (in a secondary capacity) from their new institution too - and even if this is not possible or formalised, most supervisors will be happy to keep in touch and provide informal support. For cases of Paternity/Maternity/Adoption leave there may be a period of supervision cover from another colleague. Some supervisors do continue to offer meetings and reading of drafts during their leave, but this is not something I would support or recommend. If a person is on leave then this should be respected. Academia needs to move away from the 'always on, always more', attitude. Retirement: A supervisor should not take on another PhD student if they are intending to retire in the coming couple of years. But life is rarely that simple - and some PhDs take far longer than anyone ever intended (10+years...). Some supervisors may continue to offer support after retirement. Not something I'll be doing. Whatever happens your PhD must continue - and you might be surprised at how little the supervisor is actually steering things... *** ps don't forget to register for our PhD webinar: https://lnkd.in/eWtPyVHW .

BREAKING NEWS! The annual price review is out. I am pleased to see the ridiculous seven day cancellation notice requirement has been quashed. They have adjusted the short-notice cancellation period for non-Disability Support Worker-related supports down to 2 business days. In the Pricing Review Report, the NDIA stated that in the last three years, costs linked to Short Notice Cancellations have nearly doubled (from around $60million to around $120million). What an incredible waste of money that has been! Most therapy providers have waiting lists and can easily fill a cancellation with a couple of days notice or they can fill the time with billable hours of report writing. Imagine the double dipping that was going on! I was concerned to see that providers of level II support coordination have missed out on a price increase for 5 years in a row. This is problematic because it means that effective independent support coordinators exit the market. I'm also worried that the 3.19% increase in disability support services might lead to some really good providers closing their doors. This will be very problematic in thin markets. What do you think about the price review? Let me know in the comments. https://lnkd.in/gu_Z4jAH
