A New Era for Civil Society: My Insights from Westminster. Yesterday I was invited to a Ministerial Roundtable with Lisa Nandy, Secretary of State for Department for Culture, Media and Sport - focused on the government's desire to deliver a "Civil Society Covenant." This initiative, - spearheaded by the brilliant work of ACEVO and NCVO - promises to redefine the relationship between the government and the third sector. #LisaNandy always comes across as authentic, warm and truly committed to doing things differently. (I really like her!) Key government commitments: * genuine partnership with the sector * resetting the relationship with civil society organisations * a willingness to learn from what works! listen and engage directly   My contributions to the roundtable: * emphasised the need for urgency - our young people can't wait 12 months for consultations - * called for transparency in strategic choices, so we can be treated like grown ups in understanding that not everything can be prioritised. * advocated for a clear joined up, national strategy, with a bold vision that organisations can rally behind. It was heartening to hear the Secretary announce a commitment to a national strategy for young people in the Commons today! 👏🏾 (See video!)   After the roundtable, we were then ushered into a larger reception of Civil Society leaders, where the Prime Minister Keir Starmer spoke passionately and reaffirmed the government's dedication to service and collaboration with our sector. The atmosphere was electric—optimism and determination filled the room of leaders. We stand at the cusp of transformative change, ready to drive concrete outcomes that will benefit all. This renewed partnership between government and civil society holds immense promise. Now, it's time to turn words into action and create lasting impact for those we serve.  UK Youth #YoungPeople #CivilSociety #UnlockingYouthWork #GovernmentPartnership #SocialImpact #Leadership

This is absolutely fantastic. As someone who work with Youth, I was in a brainstorming session with other YEC members at my office yesterday, and we did find out that there are not enough provisions to signpost these young minds to. A lot of them are struggling to choose or find a career path and even when they do, they need employability skills to help them get it right but not so much is committed to that in terms of funding. This is a great development for the government to create effective strategies to support the youth.

Ndidi Okezie, thank you for your insight. A New Era for Civil Society: A Welcome and Necessary Partnership I was not at the recent Ministerial Roundtable with Lisa Nandy, Secretary of State for the Department for Culture, Media, and Sport. However, I have read many posts from those who were there and I am encouraged by what they report back here on LinkedIn. It’s clear that the meeting  represents a significant step forward in the relationship between the UK government and civil society organisations. The government's commitment to a "Civil Society Covenant," spearheaded by the invaluable efforts of ACEVO and NCVO, signals a much-needed reset and redefinition of how we work together. It is particularly heartening to hear of their commitment to transparency, learning from proven models, and most importantly, the urgency that many of us in the sector have long called for. We are on the brink of transformative outcomes, this collaboration offers immense potential to create positive impacts. Now, we must turn these promising words into tangible action. I welcome this new era of partnership with the government and look forward to playing a role in making it a success for all.

Fantastic Ndidi! When I heard about the new Covenant & the government’s intentions to fundamentally reset the relationship with civil society I was so pleased & it’s also giving explicit recognition of the role of VCSE’s in some of society’s most systemic, deep-rooted issues. In doing this I think it can only complement existing frameworks in devolved nations building on good practice. I think VSCE organisations offer valuable insights from their frontline experience, with independent perspectives that truly support & deliver stronger policy because it’s grounded in the reality of people's personal & lived experiences. Well done on your involvement & adding so much to positive social impact at scale.

Love your contributions Ndidi - urgency, transparency on priorities, joined-up and bold vision. All of us working with children and young people are lucky to have your voice at the table! Sorry not to say hello yesterday - saw you across the room and share your diagnosis of optimism and determination, as well as your desire for words to actions and lasting impact.

Might be worth looking back to the voluntary sector compact forged by new Labour around 1998

Wholeheartedly agree Ndidi but was sorry not to be able to catch you to say hello yesterday. Delighted to see the strategy for young people announced today. If Teenage Cancer Trust can support any work streams on young people navigating health challenges then we stand ready to do just that 💪
