I secured my first job at the age of 27, two years after completing my NYSC, even though I graduated at 22. While many of my peers successfully landed jobs soon after their NYSC or pursued opportunities abroad—thanks to the support of their families—I was left to navigate my own path, seeking my dreams and building connections. I learned early that my destiny was in my hands.
It wasn’t until I turned 32 that I began to find my footing. During those years, I focused on building meaningful connections and leading a cautious, disciplined life. However, I realized that simply living carefully wouldn’t bring me the success I desired as quickly as I hoped. Watching others achieve their goals—whether through genuine effort or questionable means—tested my resolve, but I stayed true to my principles. I kept my dreams alive, and eventually, I ventured into entrepreneurship. Through dedication and persistence, my business flourished, and I began earning a stable income.
The takeaway from my story is this: today’s world is rife with pressure, both from peers and family. Social media amplifies this by making it seem as though you’re failing if you haven’t reached certain milestones by a specific age. But life is not a race or a competition. We were not born on the same day, and just like our fingers, our journeys are not equal.
What truly matters is staying alive, holding onto your dreams, and consistently working toward your goals. Your time and season will come, and when it does, the world will celebrate with you.
Avoid being swayed by social media’s portrayal of success. Don’t let it drive you into unhealthy competition. Instead, focus on taking steady, deliberate steps toward your objectives. Believe in yourself and the future that awaits you.
