📢 New Policy Brief: Ecosystem-based Approaches for Rio Conventions and Disaster Resilience As we prepare for the three Rio Conventions in 2024, a new policy brief highlights ecosystem-based approaches as a powerful tool to integrate climate, land, biodiversity, and disaster risk reduction goals. By leveraging nature, these strategies help address the triple planetary crisis—climate change, biodiversity loss, and land degradation—while aligning with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. 🔑 Key Takeaways: Ecosystem-based approaches serve as entry points to bridge global agendas, making policies more coherent and effective. Integrated spatial planning and multi-goal strategies ensure alignment across sectors, reducing program costs while enhancing resilience. A forward-thinking, science-based approach promotes inclusive, data-driven decision-making and new financing opportunities for climate adaptation and disaster risk reduction. 📍 Why Now? As 2024 marks a critical moment for the Rio Conventions and the Sendai Framework, this brief outlines practical solutions for countries to synchronize their efforts in ecosystem restoration, climate adaptation, and disaster risk mitigation. Discover how ecosystem-based approaches can create lasting impacts for people, nature, and economies, especially in vulnerable regions. Let’s ensure the Rio Conventions set a path toward a more resilient, equitable future! Download the full policy brief here https://lnkd.in/drP88dAp

Climate change doesn’t just bring about higher temperatures, but floods. In the UK, flooding is the biggest natural hazard. Maeve Sherry OF Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change & the Environment argues that the best way to defend urban areas from flood risk is to seek nature-based solutions like green spaces, wetlands and parks and use the biodiversity net gain legislation to achieve this. https://lnkd.in/dEWdhKKs

🌿 Nature's Resilience: The Cost-Effective Shield Against Climate Disasters 🛡️ As climate change intensifies, we're facing more frequent and severe natural disasters which begs for low-cost solutions given that traditional engineering solutions are often expensive and can harm ecosystems. With limited resources, we need smarter, more sustainable approaches to disaster risk mitigation. Enter Nature-based Solutions (NbS)! A recent UMass Amherst study reveals that NbS are not just effective, but often more cost-efficient than conventional methods: • 71% of studies found NbS consistently cost-effective • 65% rated NbS more effective than engineering solutions • Top performers: mangroves (80%), forests (77%), and coastal ecosystems (73%) In nature lies not just beauty, but a blueprint for resilience! How might we integrate NbS principles into urban planning and product design? What innovative financing and insurance models could help scale these solutions globally? #NatureBasedSolutions #ClimateResilience #GreenTech https://lnkd.in/dgBuRrks

Queensland’s natural resource management (NRM) sector has developed the Nurturing Nature: Cultivating Culture plan to address some of the biggest threats to the state’s environment and economy. This Is what the NRM sector is proposing to improve climate adaptation and disaster resilience: https://lnkd.in/g7dSeT6p One goal is to develop a cane industry catchment development plan that improves ecosystems for disaster resilience, activating modules of the Smartcane BMP and identifying opportunities for blue carbon sequestration, habitat restoration, streambank remediation and wetland establishment. Another is to build climate resilience into coastal systems and demonstrating the impact that retention of native vegetation can play in buffering from climate extremes through Cultural burning. The $196.4 million plan includes four years of action to see outcomes delivered for: First Nations stewardship Land condition Climate Adaptation Disaster resilience Biodiversity Aquatic environments NRM Regions Queensland NRM Regions Australia CANEGROWERS Australia Country Needs People

Addressing Environmental Vulnerability: Land Cover Dynamics Assessment and Afforestation Strategies in Pakistan for Disaster Resilience Here's a potential LinkedIn post: "Advancing Disaster Resilience in Pakistan: Unveiling Groundbreaking Research on Land Cover Dynamics and Afforestation Strategies I am thrilled to share our latest research publication, "Addressing Environmental Vulnerability: Land Cover Dynamics Assessment and Afforestation Strategies in Pakistan for Disaster Resilience"! This comprehensive study delves into the intricate relationships between land cover changes, environmental vulnerability, and disaster risk in Pakistan. Our research team employed cutting-edge techniques, including remote sensing and GIS analysis, to investigate the dynamics of land cover transformations and their implications for disaster resilience. Key Findings: 1. Alarming rates of deforestation and land degradation, exacerbating environmental vulnerability and disaster risk. 2. Critical role of afforestation efforts in mitigating the effects of climate change and enhancing ecosystem services. 3. Data-driven strategies for optimizing land cover management and promoting sustainable development. Implications for Policy and Practice: 1. Informing evidence-based policy decisions to address environmental vulnerability and disaster risk in Pakistan. 2. Scaling up afforestation initiatives to restore degraded lands, promote biodiversity, and support climate change adaptation. 3. Fostering collaborative approaches among stakeholders to ensure sustainable land management practices. Read the full publication to explore our research methodology, findings, and recommendations in detail. Let's work together to build a more resilient and sustainable future for Pakistan! https://lnkd.in/dfyrK_aW #DisasterResilience #EnvironmentalVulnerability #LandCoverDynamics #Afforestation #SustainableDevelopment #Pakistan #RemoteSensing #GIS #ClimateChange #EcosystemServices"

WWF’s new Rivers2Restore report is urging immediate action to restore Europe's rivers to their natural state and help deliver the EU’s recently agreed nature restoration targets. Restored rivers - for example by removing dams or allowing the river to take its natural course - help limit climate disasters like floods & drought by absorbing excess water during heavy rains, and replenishing groundwater which is released slowly during droughts. https://lnkd.in/dQABWudP

5 things you need to know about classifying Nature-based Solutions for Disaster Risk Reduction Man-made borders cannot stop nature and natural hazards. However, nature and biodiversity are both essential in climate change mitigation and adaptation and in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR). Successfully using Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to reduce disaster risk requires a way to classify the vast literature and make it easier to apply results. To facilitate this process, UNU-EHS researchers contributed to a paper clarifying the different types of NbS. The paper established common definitions and terminology to improve understanding across sectors, disciplines, and geographic locations. The authors analyzed 114 existing articles on NbS approaches and developed a way of grouping the different ways of using NbS to reduce disaster risk. https://bityl.co/OpA9
